I’m looking for a used trailer and I’m looking between 2000 and probably 2006 if my budget allows.  I’m looking at 4 horse aluminum slant load with a 4 or 5 foot short wall no living quarters, would like a rear tack or mid tack mangers would be a plus but not needed.  I’m looking at spending up to $15,000.  I am looking at Featherlite, Hart, Kiefer, 4star the bigger name trailers.  I own a 1994 Featherlite that was called an econolite, its steel 3 horse its a nice trailer just time to upgrade is all.  I haven’t hauled that year of trailers in those makes, so I was wondering for those of you that have owned them your experiences and what you liked about them or didn’t like about them.

I have 2 Hart trailers, bought both  used and love them!   On any used trailer you'd expect normal wear and tear, probably have to replace tires, check breaks, bearings,  wiring, floor, hinges, etc.

I'm thinking (depending on your region) you should be able to get a nice, well built, good condition trailer for that much money.

We have three different brand trailers all from that era, each one is excellent. When you look at used trailers, consider their actual condition rather than the brand name (s). You may find a brand that you are completely unfamiliar with, that turns out to be an excellent choice.

By viewing a used trailer, you have a strong advantage over the new trailer buyer. You can see the quality of the build and materials, which the purchaser of a new trailer is unable to duplicate. If it is in good shape after a decade's use, then it obviously was built well. There are trailers 15 to 20 years old that look like new, and some after a couple of a years, that are already falling into disrepair.

If you see an add for an unfamiliar trailer and it's close enough to view, give it a shot. You may find the gem of a brand, of which you've never heard.

Presently there are 111 four horse GN trailers for sale in the HTW adds. They are all under $15,000 and vary in layouts, age and manufacturers. It would be a good place to start looking.

Not going to give one opinion of brand over another. I have my favorites, but don't own any of them. OK I like the Hawks, but don't have one. Anyway, the main thing buying a used trailer is finding one that is in good shape, with a good frame still attached to the rest of the trailer and a good floor. Pull up the mats and crawl underneath. From there, it's all up to what you want, need and can afford. From there all I can add, is that the Trailet's, Hawks and the other one that is related, but can't think of the name right now (help) didn't start using galvanized frames until 1996. That said, doesn't mean you can't find a good older one of those, but really, really check them out thoroughly, no matter what brand or what the sales guy tells you. OK, that said, some of the early years of the Trailet's aluminum on steal frame (before the branching out) are probably best left alone. Just from what I've seen. I can't remember which brand, but anything with an aluminum floor, definitely look under the mats. Looked at one trailer that looked fantastic, until I pulled up the mats and the floor was swiss cheese underneath. Aluminum floors are not cheap to replace. Good luck and have fun finding a 'new' trailer.
