I'm looking at a 2004 Hawk Elite trailer. The trailer appears to be in very good condition although there are no maintenance records to go on in terms on servicing. I know the tires need to be replaced since they are over 5 years old, so that's an easy $500 right there. Considering I am in overpriced Connecticut, what would a 2004 model be worth as a private sale?

Nobody can give me a ballpark price for a used Hawk? Went to see it today. I few dings and scratches, but nothing overly wrong with it. I few signs of rust around the door frame and on the axels, but nothing that wouldn't be considered for an 8 year old trailer. I think I'm getting it, but just want to know that I'm not over paying.

You've told us nothing other than it's a 2004 Hawk Elite.... Bumper pull, gooseneck, DR, LQ, side ramp, rear ramp, 7' tall, 7'6" tall, XL, XXL, etc... How muck are they asking? I myself would guess about $5500.00 if it's a two horse BP, straight load, rear ramp, DR, 7'6" tall and really clean...

Duh, yeah I guess I did leave a few details out. 2004 Hawk Elite bumper pull with dressing room, no front storage bin. 7'6" tall but regular width. Only issues are a scratch on the door, a bent window bar, a very small piece of peeling paint on the inside. Pine floors look new, not a blemish. I got 4 Goodyear Marathons online for my Featherlite back in April for $99 a piece. Guess I got lucky?

I looked for any Hawk BP's for sale on HTW. It doesn't seem like there are a lot of used ones available. Having owned a used Hawk I think people hang on to them once they have them. I'd buy another Hawk in a New York minute.
I found a 2006 Hawk for sale, 2H BP Classic for which they were asking $6500. The 2010 Elite was priced at $12,900. 2008 Custom $9,995. Even a 1999 Custom was for sale for $6,000.
Unless the one you've been looking at has been abused or in an accident Hawks are well made, sturdy horse trailers. First thing besides new tires is to get the wheel bearings repacked. Inspect the floor carefully - dig in with screwdriver to check for rotten spots.

Thanks for the info. It's between a 2004 and 2007 Elite model. Both are identical in design. Couldn't have a better apples to apples comparison. Anyway, the floor of both is spotless. I don't see any signs of wear on either one. The two supports under the trailers both show a little discoloration, but no rust per sey.
The 2007 model does show some rust spots on the ceiling along the frame. Nothing you can dig a screwdriver into, but is very noticeable. The 2004 is clean of rust on the ceiling, but has some on one of the door frames visible only when you open the door.
The 2004 definitely needs tires, while the 2007 could go another year or two. When the tires are factored into the price, they are almost the same price. Logic tells me to get the newer one, but I am concerned about the rust spots on the ceiling. How big a deal is that?
Both trailers are well inland, so not much salt exposure.

The salt I was talking about was salt from hauling on winter roads, not from the coast/ocean/sea water....

Cars near the water around here rust out far earlier than their inland counterparts, so it is a factor. As far as road salt, the 2004 was not used much and the 2007 people don't show in winter, so I would have to say neither suffered much road salt damage.

TB...great advice from the forum, we live on Long Island so we know about rust. We bought a 2006 Hawk last year for $5,500. Great shape but we did follow advice and had the bearings re-packed and had to replace the tires. Trailer pulls great (hardly know it's there) and our big boy trailers well in it. GOOD LUCK!!!

What you see as red spots on the interior roof will be mold from condensation - this will wash off with a mild bleach and water wash ( 5 to 1 or more ) using a long handled brush and rinse well - do not fumigate yourself! Fair value depends on your area but should be in the mid $6k and up range serviced and new trailers

Wow, happy trails. Glad you rung in. You're in the same overpriced area as I am. The woman with the 2004 wants $8,000 and the 2007 woman wants $9,000. Sounds like they are both overpriced.
That's good about the rust color on the ceiling. Sounds like both trailers are in good shape, even if they are overpriced.

A new Hawk Custom sells for $12K plus, a new Hawk Elite sells for $14K plus, more in both models if they are the Classic (warmblood size, extra wide, long, and tall). Freight expense will be considerably higher going to the northeast part of the country than here in the midwest. $8K or $9K does not sound bad if the trailers are in decent condition. Rust is rarely a problem on a Hawk due to the treatment of the steel. We get daily calls from people looking for a used Hawk two horse, and rarely get our hands on one. When we do, it sells immediately.
