You should have a similar 7 pin socket at all your plug's hook up points, with compatable wiring. If the hitch's ball is lubricated, depending upon its conductivity for a proper ground is a hit or miss proposition. The ground wire should be in place between your trailer and truck, for correct circuit opperations.

A correctly wired receptacle will alleviate many of your electrical issues.

Get rid of that adapter, match all the male and female plugs the same on all the vehicles. Everything I have has the 7 way plug. Two trucks and 6 trailers and they all work without any problems.

Wiring diagram and color codes for GM, Ford, etc....  http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/home/wiring.asp

Ditto what Retento said "Get rid of that adapter, match all the male and female plugs the same "

Scrap the adapter, purchase new plugs and wire them according to the published trailer and vehicle standards.

This is the only adapter you should ever own... http://www.etrailer.com/Wiring/Hopkins/47405.html for hauling those U-haul rental trailers...
