My 6 yr old Percheron gelding has developed a large sac on the lower side of his penis. His penis is swollen and he has reddened open areas on the head of his penis !! What can I do and would this have started from a skin infection? Will this affect his urination? He's eating and drinking fine! It's after hours here otherwise my vet would be called out! I"ve never seen this before

Thank you for the reply! He doesn't appear to be in any pain, and I would have easily missed it if he hadn't been standing sideways while eating. No I haven't been washing him because the weather is now in the 20's and my barn is not hated. I've had him since he was 1 and never had a problem like this before! Will warm washings and an antibiotic oint hlp this? The sac appears full o fluid and I'm not sure if this will go down with the cleanings or need to be drained? What is de-beaning? Have you heard of this problem before?

is there heat in the swelling? If he has a lot smegma(gunk) in his sheath it can become irritated and swollen. We us plain Ivory liquid soap, a soft cotton sock and warm water to clean sheaths at the clinic. Look for beans in the head of the penis. Most gelding only need to be de-beaned once a year some need it a few times a year. Banamine and bute are not just pain killers but anti-inflamatory meds. I would give it unless your horse has stomach ulcers.

No you have to get it from a vet. Do not use any sheath cleaning products as the tend to irritate that area. If your gelding has been in a stall or confined that can cause some sheath swelling. Exercise will also reduce swelling if it is not an infection. Some geldings will "stock-up" in this area. its not common but not unheard of.

He has been confined to his stall! He's from Alabama and although he's been up here in northern Illinois for a few years now, he chills easily!! It hasn't been extremely cold and hopefully the snowstorm we're supposed to get tomorrow won't start too early and he can go out for a short time!! Is there a possibility this will happen more frequently now that he's had it once and will be mostly confined to his stall this winter?!! Thank you for your reply!

You can give him aspirin......10 325 mg tabs should start reducing the swelling....then he can see his Dr in the morning. I mix the aspirin with applesauce or carrot baby food unless the patient is a picky eater, then I mix it with water and syrup and put it in a syringe and squirt it in the horse's mouth. Please let us know what the Dr says....

It sounds rather like a cellulitis (inflammation and infection in the interstitial tissues) which is usually cause by irritatin to an area, such as a bean could do.. I agree that he will need to be seen by a vet.
