We have rode out of Battle Park, near Buffalo,Wy. But they have since changed the campground, more regulations, and first come first serve, so you may drive 1000 miles and not be able to get into the campgroud. We have camped at the Big Sandy Campground, in the Wind River, Mtns.Last year we went to Double Cabin, located north of Dubois.Good riding out of there. Someone has an album of pictures on here.

Painted Horse,
Did you take your own horses, or do one of those guided rides? If they are your own, I didn't know you could take your own into the park.. I guess you'd have to sign a waiver? I'd LOVE to do that!! We went to Yellowstone in '07, but didn't get to ride.. The forest fire changed our plans a bit.. We couldn't get in the park the next day...
Also, HOW do you get your pictures to post here? I've tried and can't figure it out..

I ride my own horses. Never rode one of the guided horse rides. I liker a little spunkier horse than they offer.
The National Parks will let you in. But they have rules. Yellowstone being the most stringent.
Current health certificate, Coggins and Brand Inspection. And they come out and look in at the horses.
Trailer must be swept out. Nothing on the floor. No old manure, no sawdust, no straw.
No feed in the mangers and they usually ask you close the windows to prevent any seeds from blowing out.
Bryce Canyon is about the same. Teton and others parks are less stringent. Certified hay and heath certificates.
You need to put your photos on a host that will be on line 24x7. I use Photobucket, or Villagephotos. But there are lots of other sites.
Once the photos are hosted, click the little green picture frame, (4th from right on the tool bar when you are entering a post)
In the pop up put the url address of your photo. I usually go to my host ( Photobucket) and copy the url into my clipboard and the return to my post here and paste the contents into the url address. ( you will usually have to erase what ever is already in the box.)

Thanks! I'll have to try it whenever I get some photos worth posting... Good to hear about Yellowstone.. I'd love to ride there someday... You don't worry about running into bears or wolves or such?

I've seen lots of bear tracks while riding in the park and once we came over a rise and their was a Sow Grizzly and her cubs about a 100 yards away. They didn't see us for a couple of minutes, so we got to watch them. When they winded us, they gone in a flash. I've also encountered Grizzlies in Alaska while fishing and hunting. We actually even had one chase us down and take the fish we had caught, ( which we gladly gave him). They are absolutely dangerous, but as long as you don't give them a reason to attack, they usually prefer to stay away from humans.
I've run into so many predator animals in my life time, that maybe I'm just a casual about the threat. Take normal precautions, be careful and go enjoy. I had a cow moose run me up a tree once and I had to wait 20 minutes for her to leave.

Tim, we have rode in the Bighorns in Wyoming. Set up at Hunter Mesa trailhead. I think all the park trailheads are primitive but there are a couple private ranches you can stay at. There are pit toilets and water at most of the park trailheads. Anyway, the riding is great around that area. There is a great trail up to the seven brothers lakes. Also access to the east side of Florence pass that cuts east/west through the cloud peak wilderness etc. We have also rode out in northern Nebraska at Fort Robinson. One suggestion if you are riding in the high mountains, dont go out too early or late. I would suggest early July at the earliest and late Aug or early Sept at the latest due to potential snowfall late. Early you can still have trails blocked by snow and snowmelt can make many small creeks too high to cross. When we were at Hunter we had ice freeze in the water buckets the first week of July, with 3-4 inches of snowfall on the higher trails. Theres lots of info here on riding and a lot of great riding in Western Wy as you can see by the other posts here. The other thing you need to plan on is where to stop and overnight on the way out. Plenty of webpages with recomendations etc.

The pictures are awesome!!! I would love to ride in an area like that. The mountains are beautiful. I'm jealous. I have the blue ridge mnts. and the George Washington national forest but it doesn't have the beauty you have.
