I've been seeing several trailers advertised with marine batteries.. What is the advantage of this over the regular ones that are standard with the trailer?

Here's a good write up on Batteries. Marine Battery topic near the bottom of the page. I go through alot of batteries in my Mobility Scooters. The deep cycle Lifelime, (AGM) Absorbant Glass Mat battery, gives me the most bang for my buck!!

Application info here, check under the RV heading.....

Marine batteries generally are built with stronger and larger components than standard automotive batteries. When a battery is discharged it gives off heat. If a battery is allowed to fully discharge, some can be internally damaged by the excess heat, which can warp and damage the internal plates.

Marine grade, deep cycle batteries, are constructed with plates that will allow the owner, to consistently charge and discharge it hundreds of times without being damaged. A standard automotive battery would be ruined with this type of usage.

I have one on my trailer. It's not a living quarter, but a 2h slant G/N with sleeping area up front. It also allows me to keep my lights on inside when I read at night alot longer too. Keeps a better charge.

One time I left my outside flood light on, of course it was on the horse side of the trailer so I didn't know it was on while I was inside sleeping. It was still on when I woke up bright as can be! Never drained the battery and it's a flood light type light too.

I believe you'll find that "RV battery" and "marine battery" & "deep-cycle battery" are all synonyms for the same product. I don't know of any other battery typically used in a LQ trailer. Sounds like one description was more specific than another.

I believe your question is "are marine batteries better than regular batteries that are standard with the trailer". My answer is that the battery that comes with the trailer 'should' be a marine battery. More specifically a deep cycle marine battery.

OOOPS...Sorry RT, I see I just repeated what you already said.

Actually, I don't have a LQ... I'm upgrading; selling my 2 horse straightload to buy a slant load and I wanted to make the front tack into a tiny (and I mean TINY!) sleeper to use when needed without doing a big permanent type conversion.. I looked at an old Sundowner advertised a while back and although i wanted one a bit newer with a few more options, i was very impressed at how she had fitted hers out with a AC w/ heat strip, awning, extra plugs for a fridge and microwave (and why not a DVD?) she had a cot on the long wall, stainless shelving unit that you can buy at Home Depot, Lowes or wherever, to hold her microwave and sundries.   Her fridege was mounted on a shelf attached to the wall .. The whole thing really appealed to my love of gadgetry!   Usually when we camp, we use a tent, which is fine, but like i said.. I love the gidgets, gadgets and widgets!!

You are not alone for liking gadgets - I like them so much I bought a trailer from you guys in the US - and I live in South Africa... I love my Cherokee which has a 56" SW which I kitted out like a weekender - fridge, (for the frosties) comfy bed etc... beats the hell out of a tent....

YOU go do it - you wont be sorry...

OH. p.s. I have deep cycle batteries as well...and as said above they are also known as marine batteries...

Where do you go to ride in Africa?  I have been toying with the idea of going on a riding vacation there.. I think Equitours has a trip to Namimbia or Kenya.. or both... i don't remember.. I went to Ireland on an Equitours trip a couple of years ago.. It was Great!  Definitely one of the highlights of my life so far..

Hi Leslie

There are so many

places to ride here in SA - Just do a Google search and you will find lots... I live in the Eastern Cape which is on the Coast and there are loads of really cool places to ride... The Drakensberg Mountains in Natal would probably be the best option for you... there you would be able to see all the splendour of Africa...

Have a good one

Cheers for now

Nick
