Hi All-

We live in VA- 40 miles south of Norfolk.   I'm trying to plan ahead if we have to evacuate due to  hurricanes.  any suggestions on where to go?  Ideally someplace inland but not too far away since I'd have to make 2 trips.  (3 horse trailer and 4 horses)  Several years ago we were in S. GA and had a manditory evacuation.  it was pretty hectic.   luckily I got out early w/ the trailer and it only took 12hrs. to go a route that normally would take 8.    there were a lot of people stranded on the highway.. cars running out of gas.. exits blocked off and traffic not allowed southbound.. some people were stuck on the road only getting 50 miles away in 8-10 hrs. unreal!

I sure don't want to experience that so maybe by planning ahead can have a place lined up if we need it in an emergency.   my husband is in the Navy so if we do have a storm he'll be out with his ship.. that means I'll have get out of here w/ 4 horses, 4 dogs, and a cat, in a hurry.

thanks!

Perhaps you could invest in a used stock trailer that, while not pretty, might be just the ticket if you needed to evac.  Not a lot of money for peace of mind.......we have a 20' gooseneck that will haull all of em loaded like cattle, and we use it other ways all the time, too.

We had to evacuate awhile back. 5 horses into a 4horse trailer.  It was crowded but they fit.  Not something I would do unless absolutely necessary.  In Tx there is a paper called Horse Gazette (http://www.horsegazette.com/class/main.php) and they have an emergency evacuation page where people list their place and how many they can take and what type of facilities.  Fortunately I had already talked to someone and made arangements a few years before we ever needed them so all I had to do is call.  You could check and see if there is a servie like that in your area.

Right now we have 6 and if we HAD to my smallest will fit in the dressing room so everyone would fit.  He wouldn't like it, but it could save him from being left behind.

I think flyingfarm had a great idea.  Get yourself an inexpensive stock trailer.  We have one trailer that we use for travel, but also an old stock trailer.  It is incredibly ugly but oh so useful.  We use it mainly for hauling mares with colts...the babies load into it easily.  It has also come in handy as a moving van for friends and relatives.  And as a hauler of ATVs and lawnmowers.

We gave $1800 for it ten years ago and wouldn't take twice that for it today.  But man is it UGLY!!

RIDE ON!

Flyinghfarm,my thoughts exactly. We got one for less than $2700,and long as the tires, axles and floor is in good shape, who cares about the paint job/ect.We've got 5 at the present and 3 trailers,so I realize not everybody can or wants to do that, but,in an emergency I would sure like to know if I had to load them up and take off, with a chance I might not be able to make it back on time,I'd want to pull out with all of them behind me.Just my thought.

OK.. in a pinch I could take out the dividers and stuff 4 horses in the 3 horse trailer.  the axles are rated for that much weight.. the main thing I was trying to find out was where to go?  how could I get a list of places to evacuate to?   thanks.

You could check on http://www.horseandmuletrails.com/ and talk to some of the people listed there.
