Somewhwere on the diesel pages I think I read that there are kits for them, but it still seems to be that if you haul with them they burn up, so why bother ?

Best way to beef up a 4r100 is a billet steel torque converter that will cost $400-$600 and a Factory Tech valve body that runs a few hundred. Both easily searchable on the net. I'm not sure what you meant about "adding" a gear. If you meant heavier sprags and so forth, good luck doing that as a home project. If you decide you want the best built aftermarket 4R100 tranny, look up Brians Truck Shop in Arkansas. Get your wallet out and plan on pulling 5 crisp $1000 bills out and never worry about your tranny again.

I am assuming you are concerned about a 2002 or older truck. The Torque Shift 5 speed tranny that has been installed since 2003 has held up pretty well. No where near the failures of the older 4speed.

The best bang for the buck I feel is to add a Gale Banks Transcommand and install a large cooler ( if you don't have one). I have one and like it very much. Shifts faster to reduce clutch slipping and these mods keep you out of the internals. Driving style seems to mean alot to these trannies. I pull in overdrive only on the flat highway and if it will stay in it. If the tranny begins " hunting " between gears take the OD out and slow down a bit. I hauled my new Double D up I-95 all the way to Washington DC and never came out of OD. ( Of course thats with the tried and true 7.3 stroking in it's 2200 rpm sweet spot at about 72 mph.)

They also make a torque converter lock up you can lock it up automatic or manual, manual you will have to flip a switch to unlock or it will kill the motor when stopping this will stop all sliping and will cut down on the transmission heat. And run a good synthetic oil.
I also installed an electric fan in front of the radiator on a switch in the cab when I start pulling hard or in city driving or what ever hard conditions on the transmission I switch the fan on, I still run a stock transmission it has 190,000 miles on it and the truck lives on one of my three trailers plus I am the only one that drives it.

I have a BTS from Brian's in Arkansas. Cost 3800 out the door, with the V-10 cooler. I now have 228K miles on my truck and I pull a 4horse head-to head with it. It makes the stock tranny feel really mushy! I would recommend it if you have the 4R100 for sure!!!!
