Welcome to HTW! Read over the Virginia DOT rules. Alot of this stuff depends on what state you're vehicle is registered in even though it's suppose to be "federeal regulations". You won't get the same answer to any of your question from any five DOT officers. If you hay anything to market for yourself or others, or go to the horse show and win an eighth place ribbon, you probably fall under the CDL rules.

Here's another link I've found useful, especially for hauling your own horses to a show.

http://www.motorists.org/other/home/dot-numbering-requirements/

Also, note that DOT requirements and CDL requirements are two different animals.  DOT requirements cover your rig, whereas CDL covers you.

Good luck wading through it all!

It seems we all have the same problem, what is right and what is wrong!  My wife and I both have our CDL license.  We drive a Ford F450 and pull three different trailers and all have combined weights exceeding 26,001 pounds.  We have two farms fifteen miles apart and always equipment back and forth.  We haul livestock to market and transport our horses to shows in and out of state.  I called our state DOT and asked what we needed to be legal and was more confused after than before.

Buddy: if you are concerned about your legality, consult an attorney in W VA who is up to date with agriculture rules/regs as well as motor vehicle rules and regs.....get an opinion letter.....then IF you get a ticket, get your attorney and contest the ticket. In the meantime, don't worry about it (and don't speed).

Go to this site and answer the questions...The step-by-step registration guide helps you: * Determine if you need a USDOT Number, Operating Authority (MC Number), Hazardous Materials Safety Permit, or Cargo Tank (CT) Number * Find out what forms and processes you need to complete * Determine what costs are involved * Find out which regulations apply to you * Fill out online formshttp://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration-licensing/online-registration/onlineregdescription.htm
