I've read all the generator posts I could find at HTW and have a question. How about the Chicago electric generator from Harbor Freight? They have a 9 HP Robin Subaru engine, 4000/4500 watt rating and a 78 db rating - only $469 w/recoil start. Will it run my 13,500 Carrier AC unit? Anyone with experience with this unit? It doesn't have a 30 amp outlet, but can't I just use my 30 amp to 15/20 amp adapter? The Honda ES3000 costs a couple hundred $ more and is rated at 75 db (not much difference) The Yamaha ED2400 is around $1250 from what I could find and is much quieter, but at a cost, but lower wattage output. Decisions!

It will run it, and everyone will make you turn it off!!!!! I hope you enjoy camping by yourself, because nobody is going to let you next to them with thoose type generators. They all run at 3600 rpm and that is max rpm for briggs type motors. Can you say extra loud, I SAY CAN YOU SAY EXTRA LOUD.

Thanks for the input. Would a Gentron 3500 watt be just as loud? It's rated at 68 dBA and cost only $399. Or, will I have to pay $800 or more for one that isn't so loud? What is the minimum wattage I can get away with to run the AC? I just go to team ropings where I've heard some pretty noisy generators, but wouldn't mind spending a few more bucks on one that is less noisy and lighter. Suggestions? I've seen the Honda ES3000 on-line for under $800 - is it that much more quiet?

dtaylor,

My Kipor is rated at 2800 watts and runs my A/C, fridge and the occasional microwave usage just fine. It's very quiet, at least for a generator. Do a search around here for generator or the particular brand that interests you and can read for a while. The contractor type generators are just very loud and nobody wants to camp next to them. I sold my loud one and bought a Kipor and am really happy with it. Course my wife friend doesn't like it cause now she can't hook up to our generator to run her A/C...LOL. I have the 3500ti (3000ti) but they make one that has the same amount of wattage but the fuel tank isn't quite as large and it is under $800.00 for the most part. It weighs about 58lbs and is 58 to 61db. Here's one on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Kipor-Sinemaster-KGE3000ti-Generator_W0QQit...
Honda and Yamaha make a similar one also and are very good generators. The only drawback that I can see in the suitcase type generators is that, at least on the Kipors, they do not have a 30 amp plug but like I said for what you plan on using it for you shouldn't have a problem. I wanted the 30amp and the larger fuel tank because our usually runs all weekend long.

The way I see it is ......spend the $450 some odd dollars to buy the generator and then spend another maybe $35 to buy a noise reduction muffler that any lawn repair shop can install for you and you can run what you need and save say $500 at the least?????  That is what a few ole boys down south here did and they had success with theirs. Quiet as a bug in a rug!!!!   I have a Coleman 5500 generator that is LOUD..  But I am about to install one of the quiet mufflers onto it and see how it does.  Saves me $1000 bucks or more because I already have the generator.  Will let yall know how it does.  Rocket science at work!!!!!!!

I believe it is either a 8 or a 10 but I seem to think it is a 10.  there is a muffler kit you can purchase to replace the factory one with.  Lawn supply stores have them.  Also the is a guy on ebay that has one that would seem to work with a few modifications.
