Need recommendation from Mr Truck/truck experts:

While pulling my 2H GN Sundowner when I stopped 100 miles down the highway from home, I backed up into a parking area and when I got out, transmission fluid was pouring out of the seal . I shut off the engine and parked for greater than an hour to cool off and started up again and checked the fluid level to find it was "full" No more leaking this time, I continued down the road (flat, eastern NC) with no other problems. Is this a fluke incident? or the indication of more to come? Truck has only 63K, transmission was rebuilt at 45K 4 years ago. (I don't drive it much) My trailer weighs 4000K empty and I only had one horse on it at the time. I am open for all recommendations.

Thanks in advance!!!

Hello again ... I wondered what happened to you ...

This could be a very bad problem unless you take immediate action. There are two possibilities:

1)  You over filled the transmission ... Only you know if you added some ...

2) You have a ruptured transmission cooler.  Most vehicles have a transmission cooler built into the radiator.  If it ruptures, the pressure of the radiator forces coolant into the transmission.  The natural result is the transmission fluid finds a way out.  The final quirk is the transmission dip stick will show only transmission fluid.  All the water based coolant is at the bottom.  (oil floats on water)  Transmissions don't last very long filled with coolant instead of tranny fluid.

I didn't add any fluid. I had the transfer case serviced two weeks ago and the trans was last serviced in March. I have an appt at the Carolina Transmission in GSO Monday. (THey rebuilt the trans in 2002). What should I ask them to do?

I agree with hosspuller. When over full it can spit out the front seal in front of the pump or the back side of the torque converter. When this happens to me, the torque converter has died.

Tell them you had the transfer case serviced, and the the facts about the fluid coming out.  They should be able to figure out the problem with the truck in front of them.  All we can do is guess over the internet.

Another thing that happens on this tranny is that you can overheat the tranny and fluid just pukes out of the seal. You can read a thread from Dieselstop.com I found about the same thing: http://forums.thedieselstop.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board...
I also would recommend a larger cooler and temp gauge to keep an eye on things. The stock cooler on these trucks is just about usless.
I agree with hosspuller, we can only guess online to whats happening.
I also have a 97 F250 and and I'm on my second one. They are the weak link in the drive train on this particular truck.

Thank you all for your help!! They dropped the trans and replaced the seal and checked everything. No torque converter damage=) (it was covered under my warranty from when I had it rebuilt 4 years ago!! I also followed the advice and had a larger trans cooler installed. It still had the factory one. Thanks again!!!

Glad to see you got it taken care of and no damage incurred. I hate the E40D. Next time I have to get rebuillt I'm going to look into getting a manual installed and the auto out!!! I love my truck and it's a great truck. I have every intention of putting half a million miles or more on it. I'm already half way there.

When these units do this it looks like a lot of oil has come out but it is less than a quart. It usually from over heating and they usually puke when you put it in reverse especially backing up a hill with a trailer on. An aftermarket oil cooler will help a lot and I like a oil temp guage then there is no question when temp is a problem. Some times this oil comes out the breather tube. I haven't had one do it mine was manual but my friends did it on two occasions on trips with me, his was also a 97. Good luck!
