When I pull a trailer my trailer brakes keep disconnecting and connecting. I thought my old brake box had finally gone bad, so I put a new digital brake box in my truck. It still does the same thing even with the new brake box. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with my horse trailer because it does it no matter what trailer I pull.

Could be a poor ground in the wiring from the trailer to the truck. How old is your unit? Do any of the trailer lights flicker when towing. (more noticeable at night of course)Or, some ABS systems can interfere with trailer brakes. Does it happen with the brakes applied with your foot brake on or when you squeeze the trigger on the brake controller by itself? Best to be safe and have a qualified technician diagnose it for you. Too many variables with online analysis. Would hate to miss something obvious to others but not to us.

My truck is a 1999 F350. All of my trailer lights work fine. The brakes might be working fine then you look down and my controller is showing not connected and I wont have any trailer brakes. Get a few miles on down the road and it may be showing connected again and the brakes will be working fine.

double check your trailer connector on "both" ends for a loose or "bad" connection, especially the trailer brake wire.....good luck

2000 F-250. The little plastic tab holding the pin in the connector on the truck broke an let it push back. Sometimes it made connection and sometimes not. I would check both connectors first.

I would check the power supply from the brake pedal circuit to the brake controller. Disconnect the power wire to the controller and affix the lead to a VOM. Press the pedal and monitor your reading to see if the reading is consistent. To duplicate your problem, you may have to take a reading when the truck is moving. Having a friend along will make the job easier. If there is no problem with that source, check the hot wire coming from the truck's B+ circuit.

Any momentary voltage loss will shut your controller off. If the same thing has happened to two controllers on the same circuit, I would suspect the circuit to be at fault. If your controller isn't getting reliable power, nothing else will work either.

Probably a weak ground...

I had the same problem on my Dodge pickup. Hit a bump and get message trailer brakes unhooked. Hit another bump and it would say trailer brakes connected. Replaced connectors ( both trailer and truck) problem solved. I plug and unplug quite often and I think tabs lose contact.

I have had great success with Dielectric grease, thanks to Gard's suggestion. A lot less trouble than replacing plugs!
