I have stayed at D Bar K several times.  If shaded sites are important to you, then D Bar K is not the better choice.  The prices are lower at D Bar K, Debbie is very accomodating.  They have two bathrooms each with it's own shower stall.  The stalls are in excellent condition and for the most part the sites are fairly level.

I have not stayed at Mammoth Cave Horse Camp but have driven through the campground.  The sites are shaded there and of course the facility is practically brand new.  The best way for me to compare the two is this:  D Bar K is the quaint mom and pop motel while Mammoth Cave Horse Camp is the large more upscale chain hotel.

Hope this helps.

Have stayed at Double J and D Bar K. Both can be good choices. Never stayed at Mammoth Cave campground. D Bar K is great except no shade. Double J is larger and has some shady spots and a trail that leads directly into the Mammoth Cave trail system.12

Returned from Mammoth Cave, went by D bar K and the above poster is correct you are slap in the middle of an open field no shade at all,, on to Mammoth Cave everything was locked up when we got their, but they had our campsite number and stall number posted on the door...good deal. Made camp and wanted to go riding but realized we had NO idea on where the trail head was and went back to the office and they didn't have any trailmaps posted anywhere, OK went back ate supper and waited directly somebody showed up and gave us a trailmap and opened the restrooms up..THANK GOD....... we finally got to saddle up and ride after a 5 hr wait. The campground is new and clean and somewhat shaded depending where they stick ya, we were stuck as far from the horses that you could get around 1/4 mi. so be prepared for that. After riding and the next day we discovered that we had an equine EMERGENCY..horses legs swelled up. I had already paid for the full stay but I had to pull up and leave early and after waiting a few hours for someone to finally show up I was informed that they don't give $$$$$ back they just CREDIT your account for when ya come back. The trails what little we got ride were not that impressive to me, surely not worth the 4 hour pull to get there. I finally settled on a bunch of t-shirts and hats to try to zero out my account balance because I don't plan on returning. The campgrounds are really nice but just be prepared to be seperated from your horses for awhile, they offer a place for you to put you tack for the next day but anybody that wanted to drive up during the nite could releave you of you tack or horses because NOBODY is there after dark.

I recently made my first trip to Mammoth -- stayed at D Bar K.  Didn't like the no shade campsites, but the folks were nice.  Drove through Mammoth Cave Horsecamp.  Part of my joy in horse camping is to have my horse close by, and having my horse 1/4 mile away didn't set well with me.  Looks beautiful -- everything new and clean, but it's important to me to be closer to my horse.
