What is the advantage to licensing a truck/ motorhome in Montana?  I know people do it for a reason (non Montana residents).  How do they go about doing it? set up a LLC in Montana with a PO Box?  Would you have to insure it there or in the state you live in?

I'm no expert just voicing my opinion. Somebody who has done it can give better details.

No Sales tax is the reason why.  Technically you would need an address for the state to issue the title and mail it to.

You would basically have to appear to be a Montana resident or corporation.

At some reasonible period of time, you could re-license it in your home state.  Changing the license doesn't trigger the collection of sales tax.

Folks who I know who have done this ( and also the purchase of trucks in OR) save several thousand dollars in sales tax.  When they relicense, Utah requires they pay the current years property tax ( $200-$500 depending on value of asset).  The police watch for this by checking for Title, Insurance and Owners Driver's License.  They expect all three documents to show an address that matches. i.e. It's hard to explain why you have a Oregon or Montana title, but have a Utah DL and Insurance.

The same concept applies for annual property tax. Here in Utah the $60 I pay for annual property tax on a 4h non- LQ trailer isn't worth the trouble to get a MT or OR plate. But if you owned a $100,000+ LQ, Yeah it's probably going to save you some money each year.

If you register a vehicle in Ohio, and who would want to?, that has already been registered in another state, you must show proof that you have paid sales tax equivelent to the county in which you wish to register it.

No, they will not give you a refund if you paid a higher rate of sales tax the first time.

No wonder the government is broke. Why is everyone always trying to cheat the system. Move if you don't like your states laws.

Our government is broke because of them mishandling OUR money. They are too big, and extremely wasteful. They keep sucking more and more from the taxpayers while government individuals keep getting richer.

I won't judge someone for trying to save a few $$.

It is not how much money one earns... It's how much you're able to keep.

Consider the sales tax.  My state has raised the rate.  It's not inflation, tax collection rises with all prices.  It's just the state needs MORE money.  Like a fungus, gov't grows as long as it's fed.  To shrink gov't, we have to starve it of money.

laurie - you hit a sore spot with many of us I'm sure.

The government is broke because they keep spending OUR money on pork projects that benefit THEIR friends, THEIR family, and themselves.  I do not like to see my money being spent on stuff like "Why drug abusing prostitutes in Thailand get HIV" - that project cost ME, an AMERICAN taxpayer, $178K.  And that is just the tip of the iceberg.  I do not need Nancy Pelosi sending $2,993 flowers using MY hard earned money to Jack Kemp's funeral and to decorate her offices between June and Oct of 2009 - she can use her own damn money!! She sure has funneled enough over to her husband's businesses. So, yeah, if someone can save a few tax dollars by registering elsewhere, I'm sure not going to complain.  Just look at the pork projects - it's enough to make any sane person sick!!  http://www.akdart.com/pork.html

OK - I'm off my rant now.

I don't have a problem with saving money I just think it should be done legally. That is a totally different subject of wasteful spending by the government.

The money that one doesn't pay in just has to be made up from the rest of the community. So that is cheating your nieghbor.

I am the 1st to bitch about taxes and think anyway to legally avoid them is great, but it is a neccessary evil.

There are legal loopholes to reduce you tax burden.  There is nothing illegal or unethicl about utilizing them to your advatage. This is done so one state can attempt to draw business from their neighboring states. It is just part of the game.
