Sounds like he "tied up" to me. It's not a pretty sight.
Happened to a friend one time after getting lost on the trails. His horse was not in good enough condition to have been out as long as we unexpectedly were. His horse had a better outcome though. Sorry about your loss.

The horses I've seen with Heart attacks or burst aorta. Go down pretty fast. They don't linger for several hours. They are dead in 15 minutes or less.
If the horse got excited ( as you describe) he may have not drank enoughwhen he should and just got dehydrated. did you check a Skin Pinch or Capillary Refill? If he got dehydrated it could have shut down his kidneys or caused the cramping.
I've not had any experience with tying up. So can't offer any advice on that.
Sometimes horses just die. You could spend a bunch of money have a Necropsy done, so you know the cause. But in the end the horse is gone. A friend had her horse up last weekend riding in the mountains. A thunderstorm blew across and temps plumeted. Horse coliced and was gone in a couple of hours. Questions are asked, Was it the sudden change of tempeture, the morning ride, new grass along the horse nibbled on along the trail? We will never know.

Without having a necropsy performed on the horse, you will only be able to guess. It's possible the horse did sustain an internal injury when he tried to climb out the window. You say you had a Vet out, I would think the Vet would have had a pretty good idea of what the problem was and cause. Otherwise a necropsy would be the only way to find out the actual cause of death.
