Anyone ever attended the One Horse Gap trail ride?  I've made reservations for the May 10-16 session.  Anything I should expect?  Any tips?  Is the food good?  Accommodations nice?

I've not gone myself, but a friend of mine goes and loves it.  We drove up there to visit her, area looks nice and the people are great.  Sounds like you have a nice vacation coming!

I have been to OHG twice and just love it!!!!  The camp is clean, the hosts are super nice, the food is good.  The bathroom is cleaner than mine at home!  They do have a water conservation system on the shower....you push the button and the water runs for about 2 minutes.  I always seemed to get all lathered up and then have to search blindly for the button.  But the wonderful riding and beautiful scenery far outweighs that minor inconvenience.

I'll see if I can find some of the pics I took from our trip there last spring.

The one horse gap trail.  You enter at the bottom between two huge boulders and come out on top of them.  It is so narrow at one point that you have to pull your feet out of the stirrups and put them up on the horse's neck.

Cool rock formations are everywhere

You'll go down in low valleys

Then be eye level with the birds

Trust me...you are not going to want to come home!

Ohh shoot that's narrow!  I have a fat horse.  Will we fit?  Believe it or not some folks in my saddle club told me a story about a horse that was going through the gap, freaked, and reared up, and spun around backwards.  The stupid thing had to back all the way through the gap because there were horses in front and behind.

Gone - One Horse Gap is in the Shawnee Nat'l Forest of Ill.

Angelmay - I've been through the gap twice on two different horses, both of whom could stand to lose many pounds!

If you feel uneasy, tell the trail boss you want to follow directly behind him.  Your horse will follow him right up.  Or you could get off and lead your horse through it.  Either way, it's an experience you don't want to miss!

Don't go thru the gap if you feel the least bit uncomfortable. There's a trail that goes around it.
