I had a tire die on me this past weekend. It had a quarter inch hole in the tread area - whatever made the hole must have been huge! It took a plug OK, but the sidewall bulged when they tried to re-inflate it.

BTW - thanks to what I've learned on this forum, changing the tire was a breeze! I had made up some wheel chocks out of some left over pieces of 8x8 posts. I made sure to make one with a more gradual slope on one side and with a good size flat spot on top. You should have seen my wife's face when I just pulled the trailer up onto the chock and the other tire just dangled there ready to change!

My local mechanic says it is an odd size, 235/80R16E??  The only replacement he can locate is made by Titan. Has anyone heard of Titan tires? If they are a half decent tire, they will go well with my Titan Trailer. The Titan trailer came with 'Shield' tires, made in China.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,
Congrats on a relatively painless experience. The size you listed is almost strictly a trailer size. Goodyear also makes that size in their Marathon. Both it & the Titan are very respectable brands. You'll see a lot of Titan industrial tires on construction equipment & the like. But unless you're willing to change all 4, don't change yet to the more common LT235/85R16. It'll be about 5% taller. OK if you change all, but too much for 1.

My mechanic tells me that I can't use LT tires on the trailer. At least, it wouldn't pass the annual safety if I did. I asked him about using the same tire as I have on the truck, an LT245/75R16E, with only 4mm difference. He was very much against it, even as a spare. It's still on my to do list to see if I can mount my truck spare on the trailer, or vice versa.

Glad to hear that Titan are respectable, I've been looking and phoning around all morning and there are not a lot of options....

I was really happy to know how to change the tire without using a jack, it was about -10C and the wind was howling! Fastest tire change I've ever done!!

You should consider the wheel offset and the rim width before changing tire sizes and rims.  16 Inches is not the only critical dimension.  The wheel offset is the distance the center of the wheel mounting is offset from center.  This is important to keep tires from rubbing against the vehicle.  Also important to tire alignment and wear.  Really critical for the steering wheels.

The rim width is important to keeping the tire on the rim.  Go too far in either direction and the tire will peel off the rim.  Not a good situation to be in when it happens.

Thanks for crediting the forum for the fast & easy tire changing.  We're all about safety and easy.

Does anyone know what 16.5J means? This is stamped on the trailer rims, and is on the door sticker of the truck.

This site explains more in depth what I only touched on in my previous posting....

Have not heard of Titan, but I had to replace a trailer tire a few days ago, due to a big nail in the sidewall; too far up to patch... my tires are Goodyear, and I could not believe the price. $173 for one tire. The only problem for me was that when I changed it and got ready to put the spare on, I could not lift the tire back onto the axle. It is so heavy. I ended up using the star wrench as a lever under the tire but it was physically all I could do to get the tire back on. I was sure sore the next day. I might keep a 2x4 in the trailer to use next time.

Hey Chris,

We found a tire for our spare rim that matched our Titan tires with no problem in Michigan.  You can call Gary Robb of Robb's Trailer Sales (on this website).  He deals with Titan trailers and is a great guy -- I'm sure he can point you in the right direction.
