Happy Holidays! We are looking for information and feedback on riding and camping in the Theordore Roosevelt area in North Dakota. If you have been there could you comment on the amount of riding there is, is it open or alot of timber? campgrounds, etc. Also we are seeing a private outfit called Peacefull Valley. Is there camping there? Any information will be helpful. Any comments on other places to go in that area would also be welcome. Thanks!

I /we have been to TRNP many times for many years. Peacefull Valley has no camping and give daily rides from 1 - 4 hours long using their horses. Only camping within the Park is thru a lottery system. As it is a National Park, you can ride anywhere you wish - I beleive the South unit is approx 45,000 acres. Outside of the Park are several outfits with camping / cabins. The oil boom is in this area so make sure you have a place before you get there. It has changed - a lot - in past couple of years.
Since those threads, I have stayed at Roundup Camp. It is a nice place to stay. The terrain is quite open and you can make the riding as rugged as you like.

The park Web Site has allot of info. I rode there a couple of years ago, no it is not wooded. There are scrub trees but not forest. some patches where you can get shade but mostley open. Custer Park in South Dakota is more wooded. I had to cancel my trip last Memorial Day to Round Up Campground because of the flooding. I guess the area around Medora got flooded and the Sulley Creek Camp ground was flooded. You can not ride out there in the rain the clay ground when wet is like trying to ride on ice. Any body know more about the out come of the flooding? And yes make sure you have a place even two years ago when the pipelines were just starting you could see the area getting crouded. Many of the consturction workers live out of RV Trailers.

We were at Roundup Camp last Sept for 5 days and again in October for 6 days. The flooding did cause a lot of damage at Sully's but they have rebuilted most of it. The river sand from the flood is everywhere.
This area is not to be ridden during rainly weatehr as it is dangerous. Southeast part of the park is wooded but you would need to trailer there if you wanted to ride this area.
Roundup Camp is in the Northwest part of the Park. Great riding - we have ridden there fo ryears and 9 times in past 3 yrs.

I forgot. You have to apply by application for Roundup Camp and they do a drawing to determent who gets the Camp. Sadly, many do not show and the camp sits empty.
