When I was a teenager going to high school in Albuquerque we lived in a small mountain community east of the city. There was a Tastee Freeze located about four miles down the mountain. A friend and I would ride our horses bareback down to the Tastee Freeze in the summer and buy ice cream; vanilla for the horses, mint chocolate chip for us. Another friend lived about half way between my house and the Tastee Freeze and would always offer ice water on our way home. Now, this friend, Gaye, rented her house from a local man named Harwood Rice, a self-important little dandy. One day Mr. Rice objected to us stopping by for water and leaving hoofprints in "HIS" driveway. After a heated discussion we decided not to cause Gaye any more trouble with her landlord and wandered on home. The longer we rode the madder we got. We plotted our revenge to the music of clip-clopping hoofbeats. At the fork in the trail we went our seperate ways, Darlene to fetch her contribution to the plot and me to make pie crust. Darlene arrived just as I was slipping the bottom crust into a pie plate. She presented me with a bucket of small, tight, bright green apples produced by her Spanish Barb mare. I dumped the apples into the crust, covered them with a cup of glistening white sugar, sprinkled in cinnamon and nutmeg, and added a half stick of butter. I placed the top crust, fluted the edges, and popped it into the oven. Soon there was a pungent aroma in the kitchen unlike any pie my Mother ever baked! We gift-boxed the pie, added a well-written note of apology, wrapped the wole thing with a satin ribbon, and presented the pie to Mr. Rice's office. The trips to the Tastee Freeze continued for another three years, as did the water breaks at Gaye's house. Mr. Rice never again interferred with us! Marla

This account was written up as a short story and won first place in a writing contest a few years ago. I was re-reading the story when I thought that it might be funny to some of you all.

Very funny! I was reminded of my teen years riding bareback to the local grocery store for ice cream or candy. We'd tie up to the fence at a dead end next to the store. Never had a Mr. Rice though!
