My wife is considering the purchase of a 3-yr old Irish Sport Horse. This will be the first real expensive horse we’ve purchased and the topic of equine insurance has come up. Does anyone have any experience with equine insurance? What companies are good? What companies should be avoided? We’ve never had insurance for a horse before so this is all new to us.

Equine Insurance is a must have for expensive horses. It has paid for itself several times for me. The agent is the imporant thing, as there are that many companies that write equine insurance. I'm insured w/ Bem Emerson and they have always be very helpful.

I have my horses insured through Great American.It is a very popular company and well known.The premium usally depends on age and werth of the horse for mortality.Or is 3% of value.(I think)YOu will also need to purchase major medical.You cannot have one with out the other.Major medical is $250 a year along with mortality.It is worth it in the case of a major emergancy.8 times out of 10 you will not need it,but if you do you will be glad you have it!Oh...there is a deductable per incidents each companay may be diffrent mine is $200.They will also only cover each incedent once,and only for a 6 month period.

We have our purebred Irish Draught stud colt insured for major medical and mortality through Markel, they do a lot of bloodstock and show horses. They have been good to work with, the coverage is complete and reasonable, and they have a good reputation from people I've talked with.
With the investment we have in our boy, we can't afford to NOT insure him. Now, after the show season, we need to increase the value - so will have to submit his entire show record for the year to back up our claim he's worth more now than what we paid for him as a five-month weanling!

Yes the main reason I have it is major medical.I am scared to death of colic...or something else pricey that may happen.I don't want to be in a situation to have to decied life or death for my horse over $ at the last minute in an emergancy.It gives me peice of mind that it will be covered.

Don't buy that horse without insurance!!! A pre-sale vet check should be good enough for the insurance company. Don't forget major medical! We had ours out of Kentucky.
