Any idea what new brakes cost for a 99 Dodge 2500? Its making a nice grinding noise when I go to stop, so I have a feeling it will need new rotors too!My truck is a 4X4 with 147000 miles on it.

It is POSSIBLE that this is the first brake job.
WRT cost: As a DIY, dealer or independant ?
At that mileage I would be checking calipers for signs of sticking, especially if you find that some pads have worn a lot faster than others.
You might get out of it for $200 as a DIY job.

Here's a clue, many dealerships use the same parts that the parts outlets sell, in fact places like NAPA, Autozone, etc deliver directly to the "authentic" dealerships - same "Made in China" steel (-:
You'll pay more at the dealership JUST for the parts, plus labor at (anything from $60 to $85 around HERE and they don't hurry).

It may be possible that its the first brake job. Is it very difficult to replace brakes yourself? Me, being no where near a mechanic, thinks that this is one thing on a truck that I wouldnt want to scrimp on.Maybe a dumb question, but do most tire shops replace brakes too?

In my short but humble career working in DEALERSHIPS(25 plus) I've NEVER worked in one around HERE that used AFTERMARKET brake linings from Napa or Auto Zone!!! In fact 'WE" use to remove lots  of the AFTERMARKET linings for various noises and peformamnce issues.Want it to stop like NEW and sound and feel like NEW when stopping then use pads and shoes that are FACTORY.Dosen't matter WHO installs them.

It is simple; typically remove wheel, remove two pins (or bolts) to release pads, force caliper open, replace pads, replace pins, replace wheel. Even so it is not a job that I would entrust to a mechanic (or a mechanic's helper) unless I know them. If the rotors are shot it is a little more difficult, you have to replace a disk, which may or may not mean getting into the wheel bearings.

Got the estimate from the dealership last night. Both pads are shot; and one rotor needs replaced. Got a quote for $268 for parts and $150 for labor. Does that sound right? Seems high to me, so I will be calling around town today to get other prices.

Dosen't sound high for quality parts and techs. The Speedybrake stuff is junk and it won't be $99.95 once in there.Do ask about REAR brakes and if DRUMS on the rear and in good shape does this include adjusting them.
