I filled the two 5 gallon propane tanks on the LQ this spring.  Tonight I was doing a few things around the trailer and looked at the gauge on one of the tanks and it is almost empty...at first I thought uh oh I have a leak but then I recalled that we have been to two horse shows this spring and run the furnace for about 8 to 10 hours each day (16 to 20 total) and am now wondering if I just burned that much gas.  This is my first LQ....does the furnace burn that much fuel?

Look at your furnace name plate. It will say how many BTU's it is capable of producing. Then divide that number by 91,700. (there are 91,700 BTU's per gallon of propane)

This will give you how many gallons of propane the furnce will use per hour

Oopsies ... Divide 91,700 by the BTU of the furnace... to get gallons per hour

If there are 91,700 BTU's in one gallon of propane and the furnace is rated @ 12,000 BTU, according to your formula , you should be burning appoximately one gallon of propane every 7.5 hours. Therefore it should be how many hours per gallon instead of how many gallons per hour.

For comparison, my daughter got caught in a weekend spring blizzard about 3 weeks ago.  Upper 20 degree weather with 50-60 mph winds.  Used most of a 30# bottle plus running the generator in a 24 hour period.  I was surprised it used that much but I know there were kids in and out of the trailer all day and night. Most of the time we easily get a couple of months out of the bottles even in the winter.

Another factoid. Those 5 gallon tanks aren't 5 gallons. They can only be filled to 85% and then again ... the prefilled tank exchange places don't fill to 85%. It's like ice cream ... does anybody buy 1/2 gallons anymore ?
