I am asking this out of curiosity. When looking through the ads, I see 3 & 4 horse bumper pull trailers. I think I have even seen a five horse bumper pull trailer in the past.
Are these safe? I realize this is a question that involves the tow vehicle too. If a person wanted to haul more than two horses, the logical choice is a gooseneck.
I have also seen a larger bumper pull trailer with three axles. If one goes this route, should these larger trailers have a third axle.

Last year we bought a 3H BP for day rides and trips to the vet. We quite often haul three horses in the BP where we only ever haul 2 in the 3H GN LQ, using the first stall for storage. We pull both trailers with the same truck (a dually) so weight is not an issue. We quickly learned that with the BP it makes a difference where you load the horses depending on whether you are hauling 1, 2 or 3. Both trailers pull well behind our truck and serve their purpose.

I can't give any insight into pulling a 4H BP trailer, but had over a decade of pulling a 3H BP. Some 3H trailers without a large dressing room, have their axles close to the center of the trailer. This will allow you to shift your loads, depending on the number of horses you haul. By doing this you can lessen the tongue weight and let the trailer carry most of the load.
Our trailer pulled very well, was rock solid on the open road and had no towing vices. We pulled it with a Ford Expedition SUV and then a truck.

We have a 4hr BP: it's a 2007 Circle J (all-alluminum) about 22+ft long:we tow it with a 2005 F350 diesel and we haven't had any problems: usually we have between 2 or 3 horses, since my Shire doesn't really fit well in one stall. We did put 4 horses a few times and it seemed fine from a towing experience.

My second trailer was a 3H BP trailer- served us well with two and three horses in it without issue- even had two BIG percherons in it and a 16HH saddlebred once. I did have a proper WD hitch with sway control bar, although I usually only used it when I hauled two or mor horses (empty and one horse I usually didn't bother using the WD torsion bars).

Out of curiosity, what was your tongue weight, when loaded?
