Subject: trailer towing??

Location: Brampton, Ontario

Hi

I'm looking at getting a horse trailer with LQ's. I was wondering what other people's experience was with hauling a GN that have a floor length of 32' plus 8' neck that would a 3h plus 16' LQ's. I drive a heavy duty diesel dodge p/u, would that be enough truck to haul that size of trailer with horses and gear??

Thanks

What the dry weight of the trailer? and what the weight of the horses? that would give a good starting point, plus few more hundred lbs for water, food, tack and all other stuff in the LQ

Minty, Double check the weight somehow.  10,000 lbs for a 16 foot LQ 3H sounds way too low. That weight is more like the weight for an 11 foot LQ 3H (25 foot on the deck).

What do you have for a truck? Dual rear wheels? We are 28' on the floor w/8 wide 7’6” tall with a 10' LQ being pulled by a Ford F350 05 Diesel crew cab 4x4 short bed w/ 4:10 rear axel. I have no issues at all. I really should check my weights some day but honestly I think 10K dry for a 32’ trailer is close in a weight guesstimate. My truck drops @ 3.25" when the LQ is placed on it. Can you hook it up or at least drop it in the bed before you purchase?

Your measurements are close, but the weight is around 2-k lbs off or maybe more.  Them figures compaired to the Exiss we had with a 13' short wall and 4 horse trailer was 32 foot on the floor and weight was 12-k lbs or just a little over.

We was towing it with a 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 with DUAL wheel, 5.9 Cummins, auto trans, 4.10 gear and firestone air bags.  Truck done fine, but would not do it again and sure would not use anything less....

My opinion with that size trailer I would step up to a F-450 or Dodge 4500 with 4.30 or 4.44 gear plus you will get larger brakes!

It is not the "towing/going" that is the problem, it is the stopping.  Going to a larger truck gives you more braking capacity and the brakes stay cooler because of the larger size tires, wheels and hubs as well. F450, or 4500 minimally.
