I'm having fun with my first trailer, (see my other post) outfitting it, planning trips etc.

I was thinking about the spare and the suggestion that it is a good idea to have two. I took a look at the tire size on the trailer and on my truck, and while they are different, I wonder if they are close enough to use interchangeably in a pinch...

Truck: 245/75R16E  Trailer: 235/80R16E

They both are mounted on 16.5J (?) rims and seem to be the same outside diameter to within a quarter of an inch. (they are obviously different in width

Am I missing something, or will this work?

Chris

How many bolt holes do the rims have?  You could always pull the spare off the truck and try to put it on the trailer and see.  I used to have a WW 2horse bp that used the same rim/tire as my old 78 Dodge truck.  I still had two spares for the trailer, but it was nice knowing that I had 3 spares available for emergencies.

Thats the best way to go, try it and see. Some  truck rims are metric and have closer hole pattern. They dont fit.My 01 wheel won't fit a 04 truck and visa versa. You can also measure the bolt hole pattern and check it that way. The wider tire would probably work if it was a last resort.

Its worth doing a trial fit on the driveway.
In the 16 inch rim sizes they're very unlikely to be metric (405 ?).
Once you get out of the 4 and 5 bolt patterns I think the ford vs GM bolt circle diameter problem goes away (-:
Check for offset/clearance issues.

I know my trailer and truck have different bolt patterns.  both are 8 lug. A lot fo the Ford dealers had "Take Offs" sitting in their service bays. People buying new trucks want some fancy Tire/Wheel and dealers take the factory ones off and sell them. A local dealer had original Tires and Aluminum Wheels for $70 each. I was going to pick up 4 for the trailer to get them to match my truck. Truck has Ford pattern, Trailer has a Chevy bolt pattern. Didn't work out

Even on the Ford Superduties, The wheels changed from the 1999-2004 to newer 2005-2007 trucks, The holes stayed the same but the Offset changed. And while you could fit them on the lug nuts, you'd probably have tires rubbing.

It will only take you a 1/2 hour in your drive way to try it out and see if they fit.

I'll go ahead and give it a try. I was hoping that the 16.5J would indicate that the rims are the same, but it looks like that is not the case. I'd forgotten about the offset issue.
