I can save quite a bit of money if I supply the materials. Tractor paint is well priced but I want a long-lasting durable and rust resistant finish. Is there any particular brand or formulation I should look for?

if it is a nice trailer and you are keeping it ? I would not put anything but good automotive or air plane paint on it, you will get what you pay for in paint.

If it's an aluminum trailer, an etching primer should be used. If it's steel, a conversion primer can be used. High build epoxy primers can then be added, if it's keen to obtain the smoothest finish. Both metal constructions can then use automotive urethane paints for the final finish. Aircraft and marine paints typically have higher solid contents, that allow complete coverage with fewer coats, but cost more. They are generally better in UV protection.
