My 16 yr old QH that I've been using for sorting and team penning came up lame a few weeks ago. Not the first time its happened so stall rest for a few days, consult farrier, usually back in business after a week. Not this time. She was not sound after a week so went to the vet. X ray and ultrasound showed ringbone in right front.Home and another week of rest with bute. Farrier put wedge shoes on her front and she is doing OK now. Of course it will flare up again I am told. Vet suggested Shock Wave(ESW)treatment.Anyone have any experience with this treatment?

Well since no response here I'll update you on my experience so far.I did have the first of three recommended shock wave treatments done. The horse was back to normal the next day. This treatment provides temporary relief....sometimes the effects last for a few days an sometimes months. Its been three weeks so far and our next treatment is scheduled for next week.My vet learned this working on the racetracks in KY. Its not for every horse. You vet should make the decision if they think it might help. Here is an article I found useful when I was researching the treatment. http://www.horsechannel.com/horse-health/truth-about-ringbone-21763...

Interesting article, sorry for your mare. I don't mean to sound negative, will these treatments get her sound for competing or is it more towards keeping her comfortable?

Vet says no more competition. We were not winning any money but were sure having fun!
Doing it to relieve any pain she may have.
Vet says Perfectly OK for trail riding. So I guess that's where we are. I'll use her around the farm for light cow work when needed but no more cutting moves etc. Shes the best cow pony I've ever had so she is a keeper. I will be looking for another cow horse this fall if I can save my $$ up. Her pix is in my folder here, Foxy.
