I was wondering if any of you have, or know of a dog that has Cushing's disease. One of our older Jack Russells has been recently diagonosed with this problem, and we have been given conflicting prognosis reports by different vets. On line research offers a third.

My concerns are the viability of a long term quality of life, whilst being medically dependent on medication. Apparently there are varying types of medications and treatments, some being more effective than others. I've been told that this disease can be treatable, but the reports of a remaining healthy life span, vary considerably.

Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.          Gard

Hi Gard, yes Cushings is common in terriers and other larger dog breeds.I have had rat terriers tor a long time and watch for this disease. How old is your Jack? Usually if you have diagnosed the disease early, treatment can prolong his /her life. There are many medication choices now. I have had success with www.wedgewoodpetrx.com . I have had crushing horses and my latest one is 23 year -old mare. Starting her on pergolide (different meds for dogs) has improved her attitude and hair coat. Most of the classic crushing symptoms have disappeared. If your pooch is otherwise happy I would try some of the options available. Other folks I know have had some improvement with holistic methods ..... I 'm not a 100 percent believer in these as it is so dependant on other factors, but maybe worth a try if you don 't want to go the medication route. As with the equine form, eventually the tumor will grow and reduce quality of life. But if you can get a few more happy years I would try the meds or holistic methods. Our furry family members just don't live long enough, however the joy they bring for the short time they are with us is worth the sorrow at the end of their life. Take care.

I lost my JRT, and a Yellow Lab to pituitary tumors. It sucks, and even with the meds they only prolonged my "kids" lives by about 10 months.

We plan on starting his meds this weekend, with follow up blood tests every two weeks until his dosage is properly adjusted. Was told there can be strong side affects of which we have to be careful.

Hope we can get another quality 10 months out of the "old man". We can only try our best and hope it helps.

Thanks for your responses and info.

As a small animal veterinary technician, I can tell you treatment is VERY effective.

"I can tell you treatment is VERY effective."

Apparently not in each case. Thank you though for your message of hope.
