I'm buying a trailer from an private party. Money is changing hands and it will be mine to take. I know to check the VIN on the title against the one on the trailer. Is there anything else I need to confirm before handing over the money? This trailer is buried in snow, so we were not able to have it checked out. It is a 2002 Featherlite that appears to be in excellent shape. When I pulled up the mats to check for pitting in the aluminum floors, they looked new. Does it protect me at all to have specific wording put onto the bill of sale? I'm in Connecticut if that makes a difference.

When you buy it, it will be an as is, where is sale, with no warranties. If you don't check it out and later find a problem, you're on your own. If he wants to mention specific repairs, it will have to be in writing on the bill of sale to have any meaning.
Make sure the title is signed by the owner named in the title, before you leave. Also check the brakes when you're hooked, before you leave and make the final payment.

Here's the problem. I can't check any of the working features. It's buried in snow, so I won't be able to take possession of it for a few weeks. It makes me nervous, but there's not much I can do about that.

If the current owner is really interested in selling their trailer, they will dig it out. And yes, there is something you can do about it- you can walk away if you can't perform an inspection! If they don't dig it out and you purchase it without inspecting it first, shame on you. If there are any issues that come to light after the purchase, you have no recourse as you did not perform the inspection. That's not a chance I'd be willing to take myself.
