Due to the conformation of my horse I am considering using a crupper to help keep the saddle from moving forward on steep descents. What is the best plan/method to train a horse to accept a crupper? Thanks.

My daughter used a crupper on her pony for years. We found that there are various sizes, ie diameters of cruppers. you will want one for a saddle horse, not a work horse. A good reputable saddle or harness maker should be able to help you out. As prev. said, round pen work for a few times and your good to go.

another good way to teach a horse to accept a crupper is using a polo wrap. I use them when securing a surcingal. gets them used to the feeling and its comfortable.

I've got the same problem with my short coupled, narrow withered horse and the saddle (had to go treeless) slides on downhills. I've been using a string to start and jumping him over barrels (on the ground only). Be careful because he acted fine until I started jumping him, it applies pressure as they go up or down. Getting ready to move to the real thing and bought one packed with flax seed. It provides natural oils. Make sure whatever you use from start to finish remains clean. The littlest bit of dirt can rub sores under their tails and create problems.
