I am needing to order a water tank for my hay rack which is 76 inches wide and 10 inches deep. There appears to be a choice of the 48, 40 and 35 gallon tank. One is more aero dynamic I think. Any real difference in gas mileage between the three. I need to be able to add water to my lq from this source. Also top off the horses water that is in being put in the back tack. I think the more water the better but am I thinking wrong??

I'm thinking that, bigger is better, specially when hauling water for the horses as well as myself..... Just be sure that your hayrack will support the weight of the tank and it's contents. Water weighs 8.35# per gallon.
I don't think there will be any measurable gas mileage difference between the three.

Also make sure you have enough axle & tire capacity for the added weight. Many times a trailer intended for a hayrack with a water tank will have had an upgrade as this weight will typically go straight to the axles rather than the tongue.

I would also make sure that the hayrack is mounted in such a way that all the additional weight is not going to damage the roof radius or roof rail.
One of the best water tank designs I have seen, is an aluminum tank that was made as a three sided tank. It was the full width of the trailer and mounted ahead of the hayrack. It was very aerodynamic. The customer had a fab shop make it for him.

upslady, I have the 48 gallon High Country half moon tank mounted on my hayrack. I called my dealer to make sure that I had sufficient capacity to handle the 400 lbs. The dealer gave me the go ahead. If you are clear OK on the weight, other than proper hold downs, the main concern that I can think of would be to choose a tank that has a dark green or black option. I chose white because I only use the tank for horse water. If you want to use the tank as a source for potable water for your LQ fresh water tank, I would go opaque. Bacteria grow quickly in the tanks that allow light to reach the water.
