We would like to camp in an area of Shawnee that we've never ridden before. We have been to Bear Branch and Little Lusk and would like to try either High Nob or Double M.Which one would you recommend, and why? Are the trails at each place going to be different, or would we be riding basically the same trails? Also, what is there to do in the area when we're not riding? We plan to go for about a week.

A couple of years ago we rode in this general area, but didn't stay at either of the places you asked about. We stayed at the 34 Ranch. What I wanted to tell you is that we lost two days of riding because it rained constantly for two days. Because of this we hired a licensed guide and thought it was well worth the money. We normally do well with a map and GPS but wanted to get the most out of the rest of the week and were glad we made this decision. Her name is Sonya Kirkland and phone number is 618-264-8064. She rents horse, has a camp spot or two and does guided rides. I am not connected to her in any way, just appreciated her helping us make a good ending to a week that started out bad. She came by our campsite  looking for customers is how we got in touch with her ( really her getting in touch with us ). Good Riding

We've stayed at High Knob several times. The campground is adequate, the trails are the best that we have ridden in Shawnee. You are right at several trailheads and can ride to gorgeous places within minutes. It is a short ride to Garden of the Gods. The trails by Little Lusk, Hayes and Bear Branch are nice but I don't think they compare with the area by High Knob. We have not stayed at Double M but rode to there from HN to have lunch at the restaurant. The campground looks to be very nice. The camps are about 2-3 riding hours apart. The trails between both campgrounds are great. Not sure about what the trails are on the other side of Double M.

We were disappointed in 34 Ranch. Had to ride the same long boring way to get to the forest trails. Nice campground. Owner or manager not very helpful and no maps.

Shawnee is beautiful riding no matter where you go!

Well, just to let you all know, I called both places and left a message. High Nob didn't return my call, but Heath at Double M did, so that's where we went. Nice camp and great trails. We were pleased with our choice.
