JUST BUY WHAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH,AND LIKE.
I have a F350 Lariat crew cab 4x4, dually with 6.o and auto trans.I have towed my Trails West LQ trailer all over Oregon with it and love it.I had a 01 that I traded in it was a F250 and it was also a great truck.
My combined weight is 24,800 with horses etc.
I have also used it to tow other name brand trucks to the dealer.
A lot depends on the care and how you take care of your rig.Start putting a lot of aftermarket stuff on it and then cry when it quits.
I have driven in 10 degree weather and 100 plus weather and it runs the same.
Buy one and drive only short trips and you will soon clog up the turbo.Buy one and drive it,put it to work and it will run great.
There are just as many problems with other makes, just some owners are too proud to say anything.
I work on all of them and Ford is not alone in the problem area.
So go with your gut and what you like cause that's why they make so many different trucks !

Slicker, I don't think how you care for your truck is an issue with the Ford's problems. My F450 had only 12,000 miles on it and was routinely serviceed by a certified Ford truck dealer. It also had no aftermarket pwer boosters on it (although I do agree with you that that is not a great thing to do). I also pulled a trailer that was well within the weight limits for that truck. Lemons are lemons and Ford just has way too many of them. I did learn that the engine used in the Fords was not tested with the extra crap that Ford put on to increase power and lower emissions.

Just plain bad engineering.Ford knows it and has been aware since the first month the 03s came out and yes they did improve with the 06 early 07s being the best 6.0.BUT they are also problem trucks.Its just a fact.

I'm glad you got a good one, Slicker. There are a FEW out there! Really, I wish mine would have stayed a good one. I did love that truck...for 12,000 miles.

Why did Ford change their diesel? What ever happened to, "If it "ain't" broke, don't fix it?" I had an old 88 ford I used for plowing that I absolutely loved. I currently own a GMC and I absolutely love it as well. There wasn't alot of repair needed on either of my trucks. Just basic maintenance. I like the exterior of the Ford's better but I like the interior better in the GM's. I've heard that Ford parts are cheaper because they break down more than GM. I don't know.....I've only owned gas and both trucks never gave me any major problems. I do need a diesel. If there wasn't so much negativity surrounding the Ford's, I'd probably go that route.
My neighbor has a new wine colored crew cab 1 ton swd. It definately caught my eye. Pretty, pretty.

This week Chevy, next week may be the Ford or Dodge or GMC, or International, Studebaker, Corbitt, Reo, etc. Not loyal to any, one, of the auto makers.

I still have my old '81 Chevy. Hauled horses for 20 years with it. I don't pull the horses with it now, but it still starts every time! Great old timer. Somehow I couldn't get rid of it when I bought the Cummins in 2001, even though I knew I needed a new truck for hauling. I hope my Dodge lasts that long!

May I ask what kind of minor abuse/hotrodding/sledpulling and or pulled 30 round bales out of the back 200 caused this and don't say its perfectly stock and super maintained.

It is out of a bus,the result of letting er idle in gear on warm days and over heating.# 3 is the cylinder that gets the most abuse from this.I have had to repair 3 engines 1990-96 models, pre ISB.Have had heads crack around valves and injectors.Cummins says it was not a problem. However they did reduce the size of the injector.
And lets not even talk about those injection pumps.You want some fun just change one of those puppys in a front engine school bus.Profanity 101.It is a good engine.It gives me better tracton.(in the back of My Superduty) Got a real good Chevy diesel froze up out in the lot too! Spun the old rod bearings.
