What brand hyd jack do you have?  I have never seen a hyd jack that could not be repaired cheaper than replacing it.

I agree with Hitch and go,  these jacks are actually simple to work on and there is not much to them.

What brand is your jack?

Yes, a manual jack will work.  The good thing about the manual jack is you can cancel your gym membership cause they will give you one heck of a workout!

What do you think about the electric drive motor from bulldog?  It's about 500 bucks.  Is this the cheapest upgrade option out there?

I have a new bulldog 12k so I don't think I need new parts.  I think I just need my horses to lift it for me ha ha.  I spend tons of money for this trailer and this is what I get what a joke.

Anytime you have moving parts you are subject to parts wearing out.  Just the facts of life.

If you have a bulldog 12-k jack the electric motor you mentioned above will work but I think it has to be a 2 speed jack.

But like I ask before what brand jack do you have?  There may not be much wrong with you jack...  There is not much to go worng with these type jacks.

The Bulldog electric motor will mount on the single speed bulldog jack.  I really do not like them.  Most installs require moving or adjusting the spare tire since it is on the opposite side of the crank handle and the motor is very slow.  If you want a electric motor and you have a 2-speed jack use an Equalizer motor.  Installing a motor on a single speed jack does not work for the long term. You will break the jack leg.  If you want to do it right and not worry about it install a hyd jack.

Why would an electric motor break a jack leg?

Most people add a electric motor to a jack because it is too hard to crank.  Usually these trailers where sold as dressing room trailers and had LQs added to them.  The extra weight is putting more stress to the gears and shear pins.  When a motor is added to the jack it is forcing the gears to spin, causing more friction.  A person spend a jack alot slower, reducing friction.  The end result is the vertical drive gear crossthreads.  Cost the same to replace the jack as is it to fix it.

Make sure it has adequate fluid in it. If it is low, ATF (Dexron/Mercon) can be a suitable top off.

Could be low on fluid, or the pickup tube in the reservoir could have broken off, or fell off. Was the jack ever backed into? The pump is going into bypass when this happens. Does the trailer jerk or does it take a few seconds to move when you lower the trailer?

Equalizer can help you call them at 800-846-9659.

The problem is fixable much cheaper than even purchasing an electric.

FILL'ER UP and be done!

If it is moving at all and the pump and electric stuff is not "wet" you just need to fill the tank up with fluid. It you see "wet" around the pump/motor/tank anywhere, fill it up and work the jack up and down and look for leaks. This will have some presure while you are working it and you should be able to see fluid squirting or running out if there is a leak. (would be around where the hoses hook up to the pump or hyd switch or ram itself)

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I can understand the gearing problem, but didn't correlate this to having the lower leg failing.

Most gearing problems of which I've encountered, were caused by a lack of proper maintenance. Several members of our club have experienced gearbox difficulties, single speed, dual speeds and electric motor drives of each.

In every case, the failure was due to the lack of proper lubrication in the gearbox. The single speeds have a removable cap, the dual speeds have zerk fittings. Five minutes time with a screw driver and some synthetic grease, will insure the gears' longevity.

Driving an unlubricated gear at a higher speed, or for that matter, any speed, will certainly cause additional friction and an eventual failure. Gears that are properly lubricated, usually won't encounter this problem.

If I remember right I think the paper work on the one I had showed that the jack had to be extended to check the fluid level.

maybe gard or one of the other guys will jump back in a few and confirm...

Chances are, if it is retracting fine, then you are probably low on fluid. It may just have a seal in it getting weak also. Call Equalizer. They will help you out.

Do you guys gals feel that the hydraulic jack will take over the crank jack.  I would buy a hydraulic system over a crank anyday.  How do you guys feel?

As long as people buy on price the hand crank jack will be around.  Hyd jacks will be the norm on all LQs in the next few years.

How much more do you feel people will pay not to have to crank.  Is there a market for a better way to lift LQ?
