since the trailer i'm considering is aluminum and floor is diamond plate under the mats, i'm assuming it too is aluminum. Is a metal floor a good thing?

aluminum or wood floor (pressure treated) work fine as long as you properly clean it (remove mats, wash, let dry, replace mats). Conversely, both are worthless if you don't properly clean it. Horse urine can eat through both materials over time.

You didn't say whether your trailer was an all aluminum or a hybrid. Is the diamond plate aluminum or steel? Regardless, as Bartley stated, proper maintenance will ensure a long life span. No maintenance will drastically shorten its serviceability. There are specific chores that both materials will require, some are less involved than others. When correctly maintained, almost any floor will out live the trailer.

I would have to agree with the last two gentelman. Both wood and aluminum will do the job asked. I think the biggest difference is the cost if you don't take care of the floor. Wood is cheeper to fix. and because there are gaps between the boards the urine will be more likley too drain. Many of the drain holes in aluminum trailers get plugged and don't work. Resale on an aluminum floor will be better.I would not be afraid of either.
