It is in the Gunnison National Forest. We are thinking of going there July or Aug. Has anyone been there or know anything about it?

I know the camping is primitive no water etc. Generator allowed? I'd like to know about the trails, are there many close in to camp? We like to ride about 6 hours a day so will not be doing any "marathon rides". Types of trails, condition etc. Bear country? Can big rigs fit in there? Also, since there are no reservations can one be assured of a place to camp? We are driving 1000 miles so want to have a place to camp when we get there.

Thanks for any info.

Just returned from their a few weeks ago. Probably some of the best trails and scenery we have seen in our 7 years of summer trips to Colorado, unfortunaely the campground is just the opposite.  There is no charge to camp here so that should say enough but campground is disorganized and pretty much everyone does as they want.  Forest Service passed a couple of times to clean the one chemical toilet in the campground but otherwise they were absent.  There are really no campsites, just find a place to park your rig that does not block the road but some days people did park on the small looping road because nothing else was avaialble.  THERE ARE NO PENS here as some might think, only useless had/grain feeding stands.  Very few trees and terain are suitable for high tying so we used our truck to trailer for a high line.  Most campers bring electric fencing which actually complicates things even more.  They fence off huge areas for one or two horses taking up possible camping areas.  Even worse some of the campers stay the entire summer and never leave.  There is water for horses in several streams around the campground. Only wildlife was deer as there are too many hikers, bikers, horses, people, generators, and activity to see much else.

We have a large rig and found small field not being used to park (fortunately it was dry) and actually had a nice setup with great views.  Generators are not needed much because weather is nice and cool--unfortunatley some large groups run them (loud cheap ones) much of the day.  Worth the effort to camp here for the great trails but I would recommend going prepared for all of the above.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately we were unable to go. :( Big disappointment.
