Greetings,

I have a 89 Suburban 3/4 ton 2WD with a 350 in it.  According to the literature I can find it is listed as beign able to tow 12,500 pounds.  This seems like a lot of weight.

Anyone with any sage advice out there?  I am planning on getting a 2/3 horse trailer and am trying to see where my tow vehicle fits in this picture.

Thanks in advance.

CBM

The specs that I just looked at stated with a 4:56 ratio the towing limit is only 9,000 lbs. My 1990 suburban with a 3:42 rear end was rated to tow 6,500 lbs.

Hi and Welcome.

I don't have books handy, but I do KNOW that I towed well over 10,000 with my '87 4wd "1/2 ton" diesel suburban. Over 10,000 ON the trailer, which itself weighed errrrrrr, 'not light' (-:
I don't claim it was safe, or had any acceleration, or stopped at all well.

I think I had the 3.42s in that, I'll look it up.
Somewhere I have shop manuals for it...

That seems awfully high to me. I had Suburbans for many years and towed a 2 and 3H with my 2500, 454, 4x4. It was ok with the 2H but marginal with a full 3H. It could pull it but didn't handle well, despite the WDH, and it was tremendously underbraked. I had many white knuckle moments despite very cautious drivng. I think the 12,500 rating you refer to is actually the combined weight.
