we just bought a new trailer. It has the large 7 way plug.when hooked to the truck the reverse backup lights come on on the truck without putting the truck in reverse.

The truck or the trailer isn't wired to standard. Google search 7 blade wiring diagram and you'll find the discrepancy in the truck or trailer plug. Or go to ETrailer.com they have trailer diagrams.
