Not many Eats around Collins, but Smith's in Collins is GREAT. Pork Tenderloin is very good. I also like the fried Shrimp. I'd avoid Peggy's.
The trails at ER can be rode in a long weekend, but we enjoy the South Ridge and also Lion Rock Trail. Hope your horse is shod or is used to rocks if barefoot as the trails have been worn from all the rain the past couple of years and heavy use of the camp.

Eagle Ranch... the people were very nice, they cleaned out our horsetrailer as we unloaded and stalled our horses. They had a steak feed on Saturday for $17. person, then a little entertainment... however, there is no shade around the campsites (and they were very close), and there are hardly any trails! I can't imagine someone from Arkansas, the most naturally gorgeous place in the USA, with unbelievable trails all over the place, going to Collins, Mo. to ride and camp???? Please help me out here.

WE went there for an ACTHA ride. Also love going and camping and seeing different parts of the country around our area.Had a good time , good food, good entertainment, good host and met some great people and made some new friends. Why do we leave Ar. to ride. Think that just spoke for itself.

Eagle Ranch is a decent place to go for a weekend. You can ride all of it in a weekend. It is nice they clean out the stalls for you and your trailer. I must say it is a little irksome that they charge the $10/horse trail usage fee and took away the free firewood, water, and ice. I didnt mind paying the $10 when they were providing those things kinda offset the price. i must say they keep the bathrooms very nice and the grounds are always nicely kept. I do agree that some shade would be nice as well as a picnic table at the sites. We used to go there a lot and have now found other places that have a lot more riding.

So it's $22 to camp and $8 a night per horse. PLUS on top of that $10 a horse per visit to ride. Why do they think you are camping there if not to ride?? No thanks. We rode there once and you can ride all the trails in a day. Not worth the money.

Arkansas is pretty, but have you ever seen New Mexico?

Oh yes, thank you for such kind comments on our Ozarks and Ouachita trail situation. We live joining the Ouachita National Forest, so trail riding is straight from our barn to the trails, and we do love it.........but we love your western states beautiful clean dry air, as opposed to our sometimes oppressive humidity. The best breakfast I ever had was cooked on a Coleman stove out there in that marvelous air!

We live in the Heart Of the Ouachita's and have rode Arkansas;Texas,Oklahoma and New Mexico. During the Hot summer Months New Mexico is great but nothing can compare to Caney Mountain with Charles and Teresa Taylor in Big Flat Ar.

Just curious, but did you ever go to Eagle Ranch, Collins, MO? We used to go a couple of years ago when Steve Chappell and family had it and always had a godd time, LOTS of easy trails, all in all a super easy weekend close to where we live. We were thinking of going again, but have since heard negative reports on the place. What do you think if you have gone? Or for that matter what does anyone think if they have been there recently or since it has changed hands? Thanks.

Yes, we did go to Eagle Ranch for an ACTHA ride. Not sure who owns it now, but they were VERY nice. Trails were pretty good, but I would agree with a previous poster... there's probably no more than a weekends worth of riding. Overall, very good experience... stalls, bathhouse, etc. were nice, everything well maintained. My only complaints: no water hookups, only electric, many sites have no shade and they are close together. Some shaded sites, but they are harder to get in with a big trailer. It's a 5 1/2 hour drive for us, there are many places closer to home I'd rather go.

you have heard right. Eagle Ranch has gone down hill after Steve told it to Jerry. Jerry just doesnt any personality or people skills and he alone is running the campers off. He raised the rates and charges for water, ice and wood now. He let the former help Steve had there go, Shawn had been there 5 years and knew how to run the ranch, he also was a very good farrier and trained horses. Jerry let him go recently thinking he and his wife could run the ranch themselves. How wrong he is, I was at the ranch today visiting a friend and there was 4 trailers there! I have never seen the ranch this slow regardless of the weather, never! It is all due to Jerry and his new changes and his rude dry personality. People just dont like him. Its no fun there any more. Now that Shawn is no longer there, We dont care to go anymore either. Theres no one to put on a shoe if you need it. and we always had Shawn shoe while we were there. Doubt Eagle Ranch will be in business this time next year with Jerry at the helm of the ship. I think it is sinking. Jerry better get Shawn back before its too late.

saw your post and thought it was inacurate. Eagle Ranch is not owned by Steve Chappels couple that worked 5 years for him. (Shawn and Kendra), in reading your post I think you thought they were the owners and were the ones that were so friendly to you, because I couldnt believe that it could have been the new owner Jerry Hennings, he has absolutely no personality or people skills at all. He alone has ran off the campers that are coming from last years bookings. In return people are not rebooking to come back and usually leave upset. The campground is not busy as I have known it to be over the past 5 years, only 4 trailers on a weekend there recently and inspite of the hot weather Eagle Ranch has always been busy. Jerry has mini donkeys and boer goats running around. If you complain he turns a deaf ear to you. He would not listen to Steves former help on any advice, and recently let them go and told them he couldnt afford to pay them, now he has no farrier (Shawn) and no one to mow and keep the grounds clean (Shawn) , no one to give the guided trailrides (Shawn), no one to help with roge horses (Shawn). You no longer get Kendras sweet voice on the phone, but Jerrys dry solom unfriendly voice. Really makes you want to jump in your rig and go there. You can sure tell the difference that Shawn and Kendra are gone. Its a shame that people can get ahold of a great place like Eagle Ranch with no horse experience at all and destroy it in 8 months. He should have kept his knowledgeable people to run it and stay away. People just dont ilike him. Doubt it will be there next year.

Hey Doughbelly; I was wondering if you could give a little more info on Caney Mountain? My husband and I went down there with my pickup to check it out before fall riding kicks in... I noticed that they Shelton's Big Flat(?) had a drive off the highway... then, my husband insisted there was another place deeper in the woods. After what seemed like one of those monster 4x4 shows you see on TV climbing rocks, we came to a dead end/locked gate/old sign....We don't mind primitive camping, we love exciting long trailrides, and we are always looking for adventure (don't want to be sacrificed or eaten by Sasquatch though). Thanks. PS: Are you the ones we rode with at Falling Waters??? with the Twalkers that ran 45 MPH???? Ouch, I had to have plastic surgery on my butt after that one.

No; wasn't us. I ride a little Color Me Smart Stud. I do kinda think we may have talked with you all at Erbie. Riding the to dang tall foxtrotters. Lol i couldn't even get on them. I talked with them a week or so ago and due to the heat they closed till the weather got better. Anyway Shaun Shelton has a nice place there with electric and water. he keeps it low keyed and does not chrowd it like Joe does. The only set back at Shauns is he is on the edge and you have to ride into. There at Caney Mountain you are in the middle and all the trails are set up similier to a wagon wheel pattern and you don't have to ride as farand bad weather you can break off and be back in camp in a short time,. it is isolated. The roads are all right just take your time and call them before you go in and they will hold any horse trailers that are fixing to leave. they are located just North of Shelton's. We are used to those type of roads here but i can see where it would make some people uncomfortable going in but I promise you if you go you will be addicted. Not knocking Glen and joe at all but the trails and scenery does not come close to Caney. If you go to the facebook group trail Riders of the Arklatex or my facebook page you can see a few of the pictures of the area. With this drought we are in and waiting on hay till the last minute I figure it will be the last of October or the 1st of Nov before we get back up there. we are going to have friends there the 1st week of October.

Boosmom I think has stayed at sheltons she could shed more light there, We were saving it for not so nice weather and that area has quite a bit riding that is a little to far for our slow riding.
