Caprock is a good place, might as well try Palo Duro if you do go to Caprock. I prefered Caprock. I have heard the Hill Country Natural area is a good place too.

It's been a loooong time but we used to go to Bandera state park all the time before the kids were born. We would pack up the tent and highline and go and camp at the site a couple of miles (or so it seemed) in. I don't remember the name of the site. I loved it.
They had a barn but we never used it. They also had corrals in some of the campsites.

I have been to all those places except Parrie Haynes and like them all. Hill Country State Natural Area at Bandera is my all time favorite place to ride. I just love it there. I have friends that ride at Parrie Haynes and like it. I have also ridden at LBJ grasslands at Decatur. It's lots of flat riding. I hear the gaited horse people like it alot.
We checked out Coppper Breaks State Park at Quanah. It was okay but not lots of trails. It was also rainy at slick when we were there so it could be better but we didn't get to see it all.

I too would like to hear about places to camp and ride in Texas. We live close to Bandera...it was good before I had 2 back fusions and now the hills there are too rough. We've exhausted the easy side there. We havent found a place yet with nice trails and rv hook ups.
Guess I am spoiled coming from southern Indiana and having Brown Co., Mammoth cave, Tennessee, and Illinois. Have never found comparable places yet.

I hear San Angelo is good, approximately 50 miles of trails.
Davey Crockett National Forest has 50 miles of trails, last time I was there it was primitive camping.
Lake Bardwell would be a good stop-over place to camp. Didn't care for the trails, but the campground had full hookups and steel corrals with roof - very nice.
Cooper Lake State Park has a very nice campground, good showers, nice trails but not very many miles, full hookups, but no corrals, very clean place.
Fairchild State Forest is great for day rides - no overnight camping.

I read that they were putting in horse trailes around Canyon Dam. We were at the lake 2 years ago but not with the horses so I don't know if the trails are done yet.

Longrider, Tell me about Bandera State Park? We are planning on going to the Hill Country State Natural Area in November. Only camping we've found is primitive. Would love to find a place with full hookups and corrals if possible.

Laynie- they don't have any hookups but have very scenic trails, some are rocky. Don't know where you're located but McCown Park at Lake Whitney might be to your liking as they have electric and water available. Our favorite in Texas is Parrie Haynes.

Thanks for the info. We are in East Texas. Have been to the Lake Whitney. It is nice, but not too scenic. Looking for something different. We have been many times to Oklahoma and Arkansas. Really want to try the Hill Country. I "think" we can rough it for a week. LOL

Aw, come on Laynie, suck it up and be tough. (I'm one to talk, huh?) Who all did ya'll say was going? If I do get to go I will have my generator if ya'll don't have one. Can't run it after 10 I don't think.
You will need shoes on the horses too if you didn't know that already.

Ok Longearsrule, I'm trying. Surely I can tuff it for 5 days!!! Yeah, we'll all be piling in on you with that generator. After this, it'll probably be another 10 years before we try primitive camping again, at least without a generator. It's just gonna be me, Beverly, JR, and you if you can make it. Hope you can!

We're camping out right now in the primitive (no electricity or potable water) campground at LBJ Nat'l Grasslands. The Honda inverter is worth every cent. And the wireless card for the laptop is nice also to be able to keep in touch with the office as well as posting on HTW. And, we were the only ones here last night.

If you like the Hill Country, try riding Mckinney Roughs! They are day only use however we stay at Happy Horse Hotel only 2 miles from "the Roughs" and they will even "shuttle" you back and forth. HHH has electric/water hookups for I think 7 or 8 rigs, panel stalls, 2 outdoor showers (LOVE IT!!! completely fenced in for privacy). The Roughs is a great trail with challanging and easy trails, the colorado river trail is just breathtaking!

What about Granger Lake? I've got friends who go there for day trips. And I hear that Dinosaur Valley State Park has a couple of hundred acres to ride in but that doesn't seem like it would be worth the trip.

If you check the link I had in a previous post it has Texas parks with equestrian sites and you can also check out www.horseandmuletrails.com. They have lots of information also. In east Texas Ebenezer on Sam Rayburn lake is real nice and the lake is beautiful. Be a great place for summer, ride a little, swim a little.
