I have been looking to upgrade to a LQ for almost 2 yrs now. I have found an '07 Bison Stratus Express 8ftSW 3 horse trailer for 32,000. I have talked to a few folks around here that own one (older models) and they have not had an major problems with theirs. I have read some past posts and threads on them but seems to me like they are the older models Bison's with the problems...

I would appreciate any input on these trailers. I barrel race and am a "moderate" hauler..maybe 2 weekends a month but not far distances(200 miles round trip)and maybe overnights 5-6 times a year.

Also, I drive a Chevy 2500HD Duramax and was wondering if this is enough truck to pull this trailer, the weight of the trailer we estimated is around 7200lbs without horses.

HELP!!!

Don't know much about Bison.

I would suggest using the search function here. Bison has been discussed here recently on several threads. Experiences at both ends of the spectrum are shared.Rich.

For a little bit more money you can get a Lakota ALL Aluminum with all the bells and whistles.  I love my new Lakota, we got one with 12ft LQ, w/slideout, with actual Cherry wood interior, shower, and regular toilet in bathroom, big fridge and freezer, stovetop, the works for under $50k.  If you don't want a slide out you can get a nice Lakota in your price range with bells and whistles.  They are very good structurally.  Adam at Triple C trailers went over EVERY detail with us, including how they are made, they type of construction and type of beams are used etc.  They are very sharp trailers.  7'6 tall and 8 ft wide, and ours is insulated in the LQ and horse area.  I love all the storage area on them.  It is awesome.  The windows, doors, slants are all designed to be used one handed!  Very user friendly.

I have a friend who had a Bison and said she won't get another one.  She has an '05 model.

Right now is the time to buy as everyone is trying to sell the '07 models.  Dicker with them DO NOT PAY sticker price...trust me!

Hey. I believe the Stratus is an ALL Aluminum trailer. You can check www.dhmco.com to see approximate weights for the trailer and to get good, honest prices on what a new one will cost you (they carry all of Bison's horse trailer models).

Good Luck in your search.

I don't believe the stratus is.  If it is under 40k you can probably make a safe bet that it is steel frame with aluminum skin.  I would also ask about the Beam structure.  Lots of places won't tell you about the beams and how they are framed up.  I did ALOT of research for several months before we settled on a Lakota.  I definitely would stear away from Shadows, I have a feeling those trailers won't be around very long at all.  The biggest thing I have heard about Bisons were the size of the beams and the leaking.

Also ask about what type of warranty you get with your trailer.  I believe it is standard with Lakota's to have a 7 yr bumper to nose warranty, and a 2 yr warranty on living quarters.  We upgraded and got the extended warranty which covers everything.  I absolutely LOVE my slide out!!

Seems to me you would be better off getting an all-aluminum trailer for that kind of money. The Lakota was mentioned- it does represent value, but the frame is on 16" centers, where most companies use 6" or 12", and they they essentially have a 1 year warranty. You could probably get a 8' short wall with a slide-out for about $35-36,000.

Look at what other people are hauling with and ask a lot of questions. I have a Kiefer Genesis 2 horse slant load with a 8ft short wall and full living quarters. It has an 8 yr structure warranty, and a 3 yr full warranty. I love the 60/40 doors for loading the horses. I pull with a Chevrolet 2500 6L gas motor with no problems. I put an electric jack on mine because the trailers are heavy!

According to Bison, the Stratus is all aluminum. The Alumasport is the aluminum over steel.

The Stratus Express is an all aluminum trailer. as well as the stratus. the other lines are steel frame aluminum skin. I have read all the past posts on these trailers and seem to find what everyone talked about in the past has been resolved with these trailers. I am still on the fence and still leaning towards it but I am going to look at a few others as well

As far as your truck is concerned, it will handle that trailer with ease. I have an 04 bison stratus w/12 short wall. Like the trailer but have had a water leak in the bunk from day one. Has been in twice now for the repair and going soon again. We bought it new late 05 . We use it for trail riding and horse fairs and has been to Kentucky once. I would say it has less than 7500 miles on it. Dicker on the price some. Good luck

I own a 2004 Bison Aluma Sport with slide out. I absolutely love this trailer. Only problem I had with it, was a water leak under the slide, when I hooked the hose to the outside, if the pressure was too high, id get a leak, but all that was , was a loose fitting I fixed myself, I noticed that with the slide going in and out, the one valve was sliding on the floor as well and loosening it, I tied it up with wire ties and never another problem. I team rope, and many many friends all own different brands of LQ's..all have had problems one way or another, some serious, some easy fixes. Yes, the Stratus is an all aluminum trailer. People tend to think that because they are priced cheaper than most, they are made with cheap products and prone to problems. NOT TRUE! This company is owned by Monaco, which is the company that manufactures Class A motor homes and buses. They are able to purchase materials in bigger quantities, saving them money, with which they pass that on t the customer..ME and YOU.....Im pulling my $30K trailer, my roping partner's pulling her $50K trailer, and she wishes she had mine. It's all personal preference really, but Bison can certainly give you more bang for the buck...Good luck with your decision.

Went from an 03 Bison Alumasport 3 horse 8'sw to an 05 Bison Alumasport 3 horse with 10'sw and slide-out. Love the Bison. True, more bang for the buck! We have put about 25,000 miles on this trailer with virtually no problems!

I think lq trailers are like anything else you buy. There can be lemons for every brand. It would be my luck I would buy a 100,00.00 BMW and break down on the way home. We looked at the Bison Stratus. I really like the new ones, the way they are set up, but we decided to purchase another brand. If we had not bought the one we bought, we would have seriously considered a Bison.

As others have said you'll find lots of similar discussions if you seach this forum. The Bison trailers seemed to take a drastic turn for the better in 2003/2004 era. *Most* of the problem trailers you hear about are older. I have a 2004 Alumasport and I've been very happy with it. Have I had a few problems? Yes. Have I been able to fix most of them myself (ie - tightening up a water line here or there)? Yes. Are the few problems I've dealt with worth it for the $10K+ price difference in the trailer I bought v/s other brands of similarly equipped trailers I looked at? YES - to me anyway. If I decide to buy another trailer, the Bison's are the first ones I'll look at. You get an awful lot of nice features for the money in these trailers. Just my $.02

I have had an 2004 Bison Alumasport w/glideout for over a year and I love it! No problems and the previous owner didn't have any problems. I think they are a great value. It is currently for sale on this website as I have to downsize to a less expensive trailer. I will definitely look for another Bison. I've seen the new "Trail Express" series advertised but I don't know how they differ from older models... they are definitely priced less?

Your Duramax will handle the trailer just fine. I have an 2002 Duramax 2500HD and the max. towing capacity is 15,000 lbs. The 2004 Bison trailer I have for sale weighs 10,000 lbs. empty and I have hauled through steep mountain terrain and the truck handled it fine.

We have a 2500 Chevy HD that pulls our 2007 3 horse Bison very well. When we finally upgraded our truck, we decided to upgrade the trailer as well. We bought our Bison Trailer Express 3 horse this summer. I haven't had any problems at al with it. I didn't like the first dealer I met with, but that's another story. For the dollar amount we were looking for, we couldn't find another deal like it. We are very happy with both truck and trailer. We were pulling a 2 horse Keifer LQ with a 1500, and the new truck is MUCH better. Good luck!

For the money, I went with the Bison. I just bought it this Fall. I wanted a trailer that had a larger LQ area - we camp and ride a lot. I went with the 10' LQ two horse. So far I love it, but sorry to say I've only used it twice. But both times were for 3-4 days each. What I like from all the others I looked at was the floor plan. Excellent TV view, great refrigerator space, plenty of closets (wow), and the bathroom shower is bigger than my parents' in their camper trailer. And the fold-out couch is heavy duty. I didn't want alot of "pretty" - I wanted functional. And I'm very happy with that. My only regret is that I should've gotten the 8 ft. wide! I have had a problem with the screen door not staying closed - poor spring. But my fault - I haven't had the time to call them yet to get a replacement.

quote"I don't want a lot of pretty, I want functional"Good point Terri, that is why we bought the trailer we bought. After a day of hard trailriding, I wanted a trailer we can use for our purpose. After buying our first lq, we soon learned there were other things that we considered functional and wanted in our next lq. After a long shopping spree, I think we have finally found it.
