Sure am glad my horses have nice warm stalls today! It is about 10 degrees with a north wind at about forty mph. Blizzard conditions! The snow drifted into 18 inch drifts in some places and left the ground swept bare in others. Winter arrived with a vengeance today. Marla

Marla, southwest of you we have had a beautiful day.  Don't mind the cold its that wind that just eats through you.  Had a high in the 60's today, little wind.  It did rain yesterday and snow up on the mountians.  I'm a desert rat and don't know how to deal with the cold, snow.  I don't even own a heavy coat.  Looking forward to heading to Phoenix after Christmas.

It was 19* yesterday as I got up. !st day this winter that I've had to break ice off the stock tanks. The horses were frisky and excited to see me come to the corral.  Looking at my computer right now,  It's 26* today. Weatherman said today was the warm before the storm that is supposed to arrive for the weekend.

We in south Texas also had a record-tying cold yesterday... It was 31 degrees... Today it is in the 40's so far..

We have heavy coats left over from our Colorado days, and my husb has his heavy hunting stuff, but all we ever wear here are zip up hoodie sweatshirt jackets.  Every body here goes crazy and blankets their horses when it gets to the 40's.

NM Rider, I'm not much for Phoenix, too cotton picking many people, but I LOVE the Superstitions! Gold fever nearly gets the best of me when I get to reading about all the "LOST" mines and other fairy tales. It is a facinating part of the world!

I could do without all the people too but we are going to the Az National Livestock Show and enjoy the warmth for a few days.  My husband used to ride in the Superstitions with his Civil War Calvary reinacting group.  We even drove the old Apache Trail, that was a definate white knuckle drive.  My in-laws had a piece of property in Southern AZ complete with a mine, old maps shows it goes back over 1000 ft.  It was facinating reading about the history around the Chiricahua Mountains from the Conquestadors to present day.  The only things we find where we are at, are from Pancho Villla days.  E-mail me if you would like the title on the book.  coslewis@yahoo.com

That snow was beautiful.  Glad it was in the mountians though... I hate being cold.  Hope is giving me problems in the morning, she doesn't want me to take her blanket off.

My horses weight looks so good right now. Did last year too. I have found that feeding Rye hay 2x daily and "Natural Glo"(rice bran pellets) is really working!! My two are off the track horses too! Haven't been blanketing yet either. What are all you feedin?

My animals get free-choice hay grazer, alfalfa once a day, and Horse and Mule Chow whenever the mood strikes, usually a couple of times a week. They also get apples, carrots, and sweet potato every day as treats. I never blanket them, but they do have a nice barn with free access. They come and go as they please.

Marla,

Here in the sierra nevada foothills of Ca. we are sitting waiting for our "big storm" that should of been here back in oct./nov. It's cold outside and the girls yesterday were funny they all became arabians, all are quarters except for our half arab/quarter mare. Tails in the air, smoke and fire coming from their eyes and nose, it was quite a picture! Doing the buck in the air in one place while kicking out three to four times, it's quite a show when they finally feel winter. All have their winter coats and have been awaiting to use it, as it's been sooo warm and they just stand and sweat in the pasture here lately.

I sure felt sorry for the horses that came into the vets on Fri. I take my girls down there as that's where my farrier works out of, and they had these huge quilted blankets on shaking with no fur! Yes, they were stalled up barned up show horses, and here are my woolie boogers standing patiently in the cool air all nice and warm looking at theses over pampered, cold show horses. Nothing against show horses, but that's how I saw them.....

cowpony01,

I have been down that road with the show horses. I'm glad that part of my horsey life is over! It was fun while it lasted, but then endurance riding caught hold and I never looked back. These days, both my horses and me are just comfortable, no spit and polish, but happy.

All of mine are fuzzy but my old girl just can't take the cold very well.  She starts dropping weight so she gets a blanket.  Everyone has a blanket, but no one else gets one unless it's rainy and then the temps drop.  Then they only wear them until they are dry.

I've shown horses twice and it's to much work and not enough fun for me.

It was 40 degrees yesterday and alot of the snow melted, but today it is dropping steadily and should hang around 10 degrees. It is 20 degrees this morning with a wind chill of 7 degrees. My horses have run in sheds and much to my surprise they are outside of them quite a bit. They sure have some heavy coats. They don't shiver so......I do worry about footing in their pastures from the warmer weather turning cold freezing weather. There are some ice patches. The weather all over has been funky.

It was real cold here last week for a few days then started warming up. Got up to 74 yesterday and I woke up to temps in the 30's this morning and they are steadily dropping. Sent a colt to Wyoming Thursday. When they got home it was -10. I am sure it was a shock to the colt. I am ready for spring!!

It's been in the upper 60's during the day and then drops down into the lower 30's upper 20's at night.  It's crazy, the horses shiver at night and sweat during the day....

In response to Marla, here here!  I started riding endurance 2 years ago and my horse has learned to be a hardy little guy instead of a shiny thin coated pretty boy :)  This is the first year he's grown a real winter coat and he seems very happy to be outside more than inside.  No more closed stalls - now they have access to good shelter but can go in and out at will.  That seems to be the key ingredient for him to actually grow a coat.  Do you ride any of the AERC rides and if so, which in your area do you think are really nice rides?  I am thinking of traveling a little farther in 2009 for a ride or two.  Was considering the Death Valley ride in a week, but, it is 10 degrees here, deep snow, expected winds of up to 90 mph tonight and the winter weather is just way to much to manage with a horse trailer for that far... 1150 miles one way!  I am not that big of an endurance junkie!  haha

I'm afraid my endurance riding has come to a screetching halt.  My mother suffered a stroke which left her requiring constant care.  Until my responsibilities in Tucumcari are at an end, I am pretty well confined to home.  Someday I will resume my endurance rides, but for now I'm stuck.  Mom didn't think twice about caring for me.  Now it is my turn to care for her.

I'm so sorry.  That is very sweet of you.  I know way to many people that would have just stuck her in a home and gone on with what they wanted to do.

We don't have the right to call ourselves family if we won't take care of each other. My folks will never see the inside of a nursing home as long as I am still breathing.

You mentioned the natural glo rice bran pellets?  What brand is it?  Is it expensive and how much do you feed per horse.  I use a lot pelletized beet pulp in the winter with a little vegatable oil mixed in with some sweet feed, usually 12%.  I'm always looking for help with my young mare that is a pain to keep weight on in the winter time.  I'm in MD and it gets cold and wet here in the winter.  She has access to full shelter day and night since part of my barn is the run-in shed and opens to the mud corral.

Thanks,

deranger

Deranger,

The "Natural Glo" that I am using is by Nutracea. It is a stabilized rice bran pellet. They also offer it in a granular form too. It is expensive though. I pay $29- dollars for the 50-lb. bag here where I live, So now i go out of town to get it by bulk because the local feed store here is ridiculously expensive.I think I pay $ 18.50 per 50-lb bag ---out of town that is.(maybe it's a 40 lb. bag?) Anyways, you feed according to your horses weight- 1 lb. per day per horse is what I am feeding.

deranger:  Natural Glo is kind of pricey but you only feed 1lb per day.  Adjustments might need to be made by watching you horse, might need more or less.  Have a mare that baby just brought her weight down and weaned him off early.  Started the mare on the pellets and within two weeks you could start to see a difference, for her I was only feeding 2/3 lb a day.  But if you are only feeding it to one horse 50 lbs could last you 50 days.  Around here the last bag I got was $28.00.  But I start feeding it to the yearlings during the summer to get ready for the 4-H fall shows.  Its well worth it to feed it to hard keepers.  They like the taste better than vegatable oils.  You can get lots of info from ADM Alliance Nutrition they have a web site and phone numbers.  I've spoken with Pat Cassidy with ADM, in the past, very informative guy.

NM Rider and jackbrat, I really appreciate the input on rice bran.  Lots of good info and it goes a long way helping me solve problems with my young mare and keeping weight on her in the winter time.  She's so active that I resist putting a blanket on her.  That would probably be more trouble than it's worth and expenive keeping the blankets in good repair.  I've seen rice bran oil and thought is was very pricey.  My horses don't mind the taste of a little veggie oil mixed in with soaked beet pulp and some sweet feed.  I'm feeding twice a day and managing to maintain a good weight on all them (4) this year.  I got a head start on winter this year and fattened them up a little in the fall.  When I look at my young mare, she is just not carrying the weight that the other 3 are carrying.  I know she's very active and can't walk any where.  She has to trot, lope or gallop to get where she is going.  Busy mare, but a good horse.  Love her a lot.  Eventually she will become my daughter's horse, but she's not ready for her yet.  Couple  more years and I'll put them together.
