I'm not a trailer salesperson, but I think the 720 is all aluminum and the 727 is alum over a steel frame. The steel frame has been coated with Sunlite, similar to Rhino Liner. I am sure that a Sundowner dealer/salesperson will chime in....soon. Have fun trailer shopping. I love my 2 horse BP Sundowner Sunlite 727.

I have a 2005 727 4 horse and love it! My husband liked the 720 because he thinks there is more air flow in the summer. The 720 has the slats on butt sideours has bus windows. I love the workmanship of sundowner, pulls like a dream. We bought ours used and it still smelled new...so we took what it had. One thing I love is the escape door and the dressing door are side by side. Very convenient. Good luck in your search. You can go to the Sundowner website and print off and compare the models they are all listed.

My day trailer/search & rescue trailer is a Sundowner BP,  just a handy rig without DR that I can get in and out of places in these situations....great little rig with the 20 GN stock trailer won't work, and the LQ definitely does not need to go on the search and rescue deals in the small places we have to park and maneuver!  I got is used (97 model) and it has been hassle free!

I copied and pasted this from another post it was written by covertcowboy, hope it helps:

What is the model number of the trailer? Sundowner has had a steel frame/aluminum skin trailer line for many years. They've also had the aluminum frame trailer for many years. Both these trailers have coexisted for quite some time now.
If you can find the model number of the trailer:
727 - Steel Frame
720 - Aluminum Frame
725 - Aluminum Frame Lined and Insulated

Also, the last 2 letters in the VIN number should tell you as well. ZA is steel, LA is aluminum.

It's a coincidence, but,I've got trailer trading fever and looking at a 1999 Sundowner 2H Valulite.Do you know much about this model? It is a GN,supposed to be steel frame/aluminum skin.

Thanks Monsterhorse. You saved me some work! Keep in mind that the VIN number trick above was intended for use on LQ trailers. On non-LQ trailers its not the same. One thing I will add that I forgot... the 777 is also a steel frame trailer... its just a straight load (where as the 727 is slant).

The underlying frame on the 727 (or 777) trailers is not SunCoated, but powder coated. If you're not familiar with the powder coat process... the frame is electrically charged and the powder is sprayed onto the frame from multiple angles. The electrical charge pulls the powder into the pores in the steel (where as typical paint just lays on top). The frame is then baked in an oven to cure the powder coat.

You will, however, find the SunCoat around the door and window frames as well as in the horse area and on the neck and breastplate.

As far as ordering them in terms of price...
727 (or 777) is the least expensive followed by 720, then 725 being the most expensive.

Hope that helps.

Ok, so I have a 95 model sundowner. Where do I find the model number? It is a 13 ft lq and insulated in the horse area also. I looked at the vin nunber on the tag under the gooseneck. Didn't see any numbers like you talked about. It did have a model number "K'.. Which is it, 720, 725 727?

If it's all white skin= 725, aluminum bottom and/or white or aluminum top= 720. They never built steel framed till 96?, specially in LQ's till 2003/4

Someone else on here also stated that if the trailer had a double band of DOT tape on it, then it was an all aluminum. If it had a single band of DOT tape it was a steel frame trailer. Believe I got that right, that way you could tell from a distance, or you could tell without having to crawl underneath.

Duckman, I am trading my Exiss because it has a 4 foot short wall and no potty!! The sundowner is the same year and about the same price as my Exiss and it has an 8' short wall and all the extras, (Potty, couch, frig, ect.) If this weren't such a great deal I would never sell my exiss. When ya got a group of little girls going with ya, ya need all the room you can get.
Retento,
Nope, I don't have A trailer I have 2. Smarty!!!

WOW! Two trailers! Then you need more horses to show and another truck to tow! Start you a truck-n-trailer rental type deal!

I called a sundowner dealer and told them it was all aluminum, we looked under it and you could tell, and that it was insulated in the horse quarters. They said it was a 725. Someone else said the same thing in a previous post. I also looked at the dot tape at the bottom. It has 2 rows. Must be something to that too! I will do what you said with the vin number and see what it says. thanks a bunch. anything you want to know, just come on this board!!!!!

Here is the easiest way.......

1 row of D.O.T. tape along bottom rail with a stainless cap on bottom rail is steel frame...

2 rows of D.O.T. tape with an aluminum bottom rail is aluminum ...

Anything that ends in a "7" is steel frame aka, 707,727,737,777,.....

Pretty much everyting else is all aluminum except the gooseneck area.........they use to go by names, Valuelite and Sunlite...now everyting is numbers....741,705,720,725,737,727,707,777,etc,etc...

Everything else is speculation......

Monsterhorse,I think they were asking me,because I made the post about thinking about getting a 2H Sundowner.

For Rentento's information, not that anybody asked him or that he really needs to know, but I have 3 trailers.I'm not getting rid of the Exiss. And I'm not saying what I am considering trading for the Sundowner I'm looking at lest some wiseguy such has himself has something derogatory to say about my trade.

Yeah,I've got trailers, probably have had more than you'll ever have, and probably will be pulling one when you're walking.

crowleysridgegirl, ease up on me a little, just messin with you. One post you are all about your Exiss, next post you are looking to trade! Hello! I don't care how many trailers you got, Get you one of those "Blue Moon" trailers. How many trailers can you pull at one time anyway?

You keep pulling all your trailers and I'll keep wishing I could walk............I ain't got but one leg and it don't work too good, so I'll be nice, I might be needing a ride sometime.

One leg? What??? You're messing with me good this time.

I have a 2H I'd like to swap for an aluminum,is all I was asking about, was a Sundowner I'd seen at a dealer, and just wanted to know what people thought about it.I STILL love my Exiss.Think I'll have it put on my tombstone.

People get rid of  trailers, horses, cars, and  spouses  all the time and get different models.

Getting rid of trailers and getting another one is usually more fun and easier than spouses, tho.

Considering trading my steel 2H BP for a GN Sundowner Valulite. What does anybody out there think about the Sundowner? I'll take all remarks and advice and weigh them carefully.

Just look at the frame carefully. There are a lot of them out there where the steel frame is "corroding" away. You'll see it flaking off large chunks of steel underneath if that one is one of them that is. If that part is good, then they are generally nice trailers.

Oh, its definitely aluminum. We looked under the bottom, no steel frame. Aluminum box with the runners (i guess thats what you call them) about 7 or 8 inches apart. It looks real good underneath.
