We have been looking at trailers with slide/glideouts. I like the extra space. Just was wondering if there have been any major complaints on breaking down, leaking, etc?
Hubby gets home next month and we start the trailer shopping then. So I am still doing my research.
Any info would be great! The dealers tend to tell you what you want to hear so I want to hear from owners and their experiences.

You'll want to get a hydraulic slide or you will have problems.
Gear driven electric systems are prone to wearing out or breaking completely, especially in cold weather. In addition, you can't have much weight in the slide for it to work.
On a hydraulic system you never have to worry about gears breaking and you can have a slide with a couch/dinette full of people and still slide it in and out. It will last for ages, too.

Completely untrue. Either method of operation is capable of providing years of trouble free service.
Nothing wrong with trying to sell your "brand" covert, but at least tell the story correctly so you don't ruin your own credibility. Just some friendly advice.

We just traded for a different trailer with a slideout. You would not believe how much more room you have. We are not in our trailer that much but it sure is nice when you are. I would recommend getting one in a heartbeat.

I have had two different 3H LQ MT trailers each with an electric slide. I had many issues with them both. To the point that, although I loved the extra room, I hated the grief the electric slide caused me more than the room. I currently have a 3H LQ and a 4H LQ and neither has a slide. I usually only keep an LQ trailer for about 2 years so usually I suffer thru the dislikes and regrets until it is time for the next purchase. I am considering getting a hydraulic slide in my next LQ trailer, maybe. But, I will never, ever, buy another LQ trailer with an electric slide in it since they are just too darn tempermental.

I have an electric(not Hydraulic) slide out in my fifth wheel and it's a 12' slideout, Couch and a dinette, most horse trailers you see have a 6' slideout. So I would assume that it is twice as heavy as a horse trailer slide. I have not had the first problem out of it and it is going on 4 years old.

I want to see someone put 3 grown men on the couch in an electric slide and see how long it works......the hydraulic are alot more dependable, faster, and less maintenance!! I have seen it on a hydraulic slide with no problem.

Lets see 6' more feet of wall(12' slideout) A dinette with all my wifes stuff in it, we keep all the extra blankets, sheets under the couch, I say that would be equal to 3 men on a couch and 6' slideout. We have not had a problem out of it.

The slide is really nice especially in a smaller lq. However a big lq with a big slide would be wonderful. One on this site is my dream trailer: the 12' slideout Merhow on Diamond J's inventory.

I have a 6' electric slide in mine and it's been working fine for 4 years. my only problem was when the electrical lead going to the battery corroded and broke off. It left me unable to move the slide until I figured out what the problem was.

Pickup the phone and call the engineering department of the major trailer companies. Ask them why they went to hydraulic slides (most of them have) and what warranty or customer relations problems they encountered with the previous cable and corkstrew mechanisms. I learned a bundle from calls to three different companies before we traded for our new LQ this year. Got pretty much the same story from all three. Even got referred to a company that manufactures both types of slides as an OEM for RVs and LQs. Worth the time to research before you spend what LQ trailers cost these days.

Anyhow, a slide out is great be it electric or hydraulic if extra room is something you are looking for. However, most of the time (not all of the time, but most) it is a trade off you get the extra room, but loose alot of your cabinet space. They also add weight to the trailer. Those are some of the pros and cons.

I don't own a trailer with a slide, yet, but I was at the Shadow dealer purchasing a 2H and had a look at their trailer with a double slide. They have come up with slide that does not have a motor and simply pushes in and out. It was demonstrated to me and he said that it really cuts down on the weight of the trailer not having to have the motor for the slide. Not sure of the pros and cons but certainly something to think about. This was an 8ft trailer with the double slide and talk about room!

I saw the Shadow slide out demo'd at the Congress. The salesman just sat on the sofa and did the Fred Flinstone thing with his feet to bring in the manual slide. But, something that should be mentioned is that, those slides only went out 18" and most other slideouts go out over twice that.
Please let me be clear that I am not knocking this trailer in anyway. Just stating my observation.
