When I 1st saw 86752 that was my impression but after looking at the others you mentioned - I do believe there are people out there who think we are gullible!!!

That's only because some of us are.  Common, you don't believe you can get a $120,000 trailer for $3,000 or whatever.

Horse Trailer World could pay me to scope these guys out and test for phone numbers and emails! (Just kidding)

I'm currently in the market for a trailer and I'm getting real good at seeing the "too good to be true" stuff. I actually replied (emailed) to one of the ads here on HTW, actually 2, and got the same form letter back from both, even though they were different names, adresses, and even different states. Anyone reply for fun to one of those Ebay ads? I did, the reply said that the "trailer" was at an Ebay warehouse miracuously close to my home town, though the "owner" was in England and selling trailer because of a nasty divorce. They said that upon receiving half of the price through Western Union that "Ebay would deliver" the trailer to me and I could inspect it then. BIG FAT SCAM!!!! Red flag: There is no such thing as an "Ebay warehouse". It must have worked for them somewhere along the line or they wouldn't keep posting ads. I guess I'm in the wrong profession.

Good luck to all those trying to find that perfect trailer!!60

Western Union is also a red flag. It it my understanding that if you use Western Union for anything - it is like sending cash. You pay WU, they verify your funds, then they forward funds to other party just like handing over cash. You have no protection once you pay WU - they are just a recognized and to their credit trusted third party who makes sure funds are passed from one party to the other.

Western Union should be your first Red Flag, the person lives overseas is the second red flag, the ebay warehouse should be the third Red Flag and the free delivery on a $1200 trailer is the utimate clue this is a scam.

If your gonna shop on ebay only shop Through ebay.

I contacted one guy who told me. he lived in England and inhertited the trailer from his Dad who lived in Ca. that had just passed away, He said he didn't own horses so didn't want to pay to have the trailer shipped to England. He said that the trailer was being stored in a warehouse (ebay) in California and if I sent him half of the money (WU) that he would have the trailer shipped to me in Florida at no extra cost, I could keep the the trailer for 30 days and if I decided I didn't like it he would send me my money back and have the trailer picked up at his expense.

I told him I have a Sister(not really) that lives in California and she wants to make arrangements to come and see the trailer at the warehouse. I never heard from him again. I told another guy that I was leaving right now to go and send him the money(not). Hey if they can waste our time at least we can have a little fun at their expense.

The fact is most of these guys do live overseas and out of reach of our Good ole' American Justice. They have nothing to lose by scamming us.

I am just glad they make these scam ads easy to spot by putting rediculiously low prices on top dollar trailers.

As for scams on horse trailer world, most of the ads are stolen from dealers who advertise on here, the scammer takes the ad and changes the price and contact info, so if you see a trailer you like and know that the price is unheard of, keep looking, your are likely to find the same trailer ad at the correct price.

There are good trailers out there at good prices, just be patient and shop through reputable people, and remember: You get what you pay for.

Sadly there are people gullible and greedy enough to fall for these scams.

This is the funniest thing I ever read about someone messing with a scammer.

http://www.bustedupcowgirl.com/scam.htm

There are those in law enforcement that caution about scamming the scammers for safety sake.

Just saw a bunch on eBay last night. I'd have posted a link, but eBay is fairly quick to pull most of those scam ads off their site. The biggest clue on those that it is a scam isn't just the price, it's the don't contact me through eBay, use this email because: I'm out of town; I don't check that email often because ...; I think you are really stupid.  OK, they don't really use the last one. They do this because they have usually stolen someone's eBay identity in order to list the item. If you email the actual owner of the identity the scams up. After all they are  I don't remember listing a horse trailer. I don't even have a horse, let alone a horse trailer.

They also claim they are selling it as: won't accept bids 'buy it now' only, for usually something around $3,000 for an $80,000+ trailer. Only it's not through eBay's buy it now, it's contact me at that email in the listing to 'buy it now'. Bet they want the money wire transfered too.

Oh, and as to how they steal the eBayer's identity, it's really simple. They phish for the info. You know those emails you get claiming to be from eBay saying your account will be suspended because: there is a problem with your billing that needs to be updated; there has been suspicious activity on your account; again we think you're stupid, so click on this link (which will take you to a site that looks just like eBay) where they will get you to give them your password, and quite possibly credit info and whatever else they ask for . I've never clicked on any of those links so I can only guess as to what info they will try to get from you. Their threat is if you don't click on their link your account will be suspended.

They not only do this for eBay scams, but indentity theft or just plain theft as well. Which is why you should only directly log in to those places (PayPal, any credit card company that you use) through their official websites and never through a link in an email.

Shop careful and there are real deals to be had.

Oh and yes I find weeding through the fraud stuff annoying too.

Take a look at Listing #  87771 .  I think I've seen these photos on a for real ad on this site;  and I am pretty sure that is a 2006 Bison, not an 04 because of the doors under the gooseneck.  Wish these creeps would not post here!

I realize that I am a litte late on this thread, but it's a good topic! I have seen some of those unbelievable trailers, and a couple I thought are just typos? Were getting ready to list our trailer on HTW and I am afraid of the scammers just trying to mess with you! I listed my friends trailer for her last week, and she's already had an email from Holland, HELLO:-):-) SCAM! She just deleted the email, but it's sad that there are those types of people out there.
With that said, any advice/tips for me?

Have any of the dealers on here been scammed before? We just had a lady contact us by email who wants one of our trailers and said she would send a check for the trailer----several thousand dollars in excess of what we're asking.....then she said to wire the extra money to her private shipper to pay shipping on the trailer 16 Has anyone else run into this? I just think this is kind of suspicious!

Remember these scammers are thieves;  they want your money in exchange for their forged "cashiers check."  Years ago, it was money orders.  A friend of mine took a money order, gave the client change back, and then the money order turned out to be a forgery.  The key is if someone wants change back.

To all you creeps out there, STAY OFF THIS SITE!!!!!!!  We are watching for you and will bust you every time!

Also, a scam that I have heard of more recently is the one where the con artist will have one of those services for the hearing impaired call the dealer. The actual thief is online typing, and the operator has no clue what is going on most of the time. They will use stolen credit cards to try to make large purchases undetected. Actually, a couple of friends of mine who are dealers had someone try this on them, but caught on. I am not sure all of the details of how it works, though. I was told that it is operated from somewhere overseas.

I think it is a very unfortunate and lowdown thing to do, taking advantage of a service that is provided to assist people.

Thanks to everyone for the lookouts and all the fraud reports emailed in. We are monitoring closely. It has gotten a lot worse the past 2 months. BTW, the credit card numbers are always stolen. We get a call a few weeks later from the real card holder. Admin

Be careful, the scammer's are smart enough to change the phone number on the check to one of their's.  So, use directory service for the phone number.
