I had a hauler bring my new trailer from Minnesota to Washington state.  I took it in to have everything checked out at the RV dealer and low and behold, the generator has been stolen from the top of the trailer (it has its own metal box).  I didn't even think to check it when he arrived with it.  Is there anything I can do to fight this with the hauler - at least to claim it against insurance? I was thinking of calling our local police and having them come and fingerprint it since noone else has been up there....but am not sure if that will help.....anyone have any ideas? I just can't believe people are so crooked!! I am cleary too trusting!!!!

Call the police, file a report. Call the hauler...get his insurance information, have you informed him that the gen is missing? Call your insurance company. Where is the hauler licensed? MN? File a complaint. I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

I am calling the police tomorrow to file a report.  It is insured so I will also call the insurance company to check on that.  The seller started the generator that day that it was picked up, so it was stolen between there and here....

Because I know the generator was there when he picked it up and it wasn't when it got here....if he didn't take it, it was still his responsibilty to make sure the trailer arrived in the same condition that it left.  I have already called him, which of course he denies knowing anything about it.  Have since done some checking and there is a list of people that he has done bad deals with which raises the suspicion even further...

Was it an individual or a company hauler?

It looks as if you may be getting ready to go to court. If the police aren't or can't do anything, which I doubt they can ( because it's his word that it was there when he delivered it and he 'doesn't know anything about it') law enforcement would have to have cause to search his property or place of business for it.And he has probably already taken the steps necessary to see that it won't be there,if he is the one responsible for the loss.

I'd be curious to know if it was a straight through haul or if he stopped for any length of time.Althought difficult to do,a generator could be stolen from the trailer during a stop but I would think the thieves would have to be in numbers of more than 2 and work pretty fast!

I believe I would start to think of a lawyer for this.

But you did say it was insured,so,it will be their job to try to recoup the generator or its' value I would think.

I have a couple of questions: 1. was the generator built in or a portable one sitting on the roof? 2. Are you "positive" the generator was on the trailer when it left? 3. Can you tell if any wiring was cut?

The generator was on top of the trailer in its own metal box. Someone had to know it was up there. The wires were cut. I agree, he had to have help because it was the larger size to run everything on the trailer so it would have been too heavy for one person. They left the exhaust pipe to make everything look normal...must not have been a first time job. The sellers started the generator the day the trailer left their place, so yes I know it was up there...

The police and likely an attorney would probably say,'Or,so they SAY.'

I remember reading this thread a week or so, ago.

http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=8800&posts=6

Was there anyone in this thread that helped you get your trailer delivered to you or helped make contact with someone else to deliver it to you?

Did you use Uship?

Did you use an individual?

Did "wyndancer", (real name, Dan Voss) give you any help?

I appreciate the fact that you were told that the dealer started it right before  shipping.  But can they prove  it?  The hauler says he just hauled the trailer, doesn't know if the generator was in the box or not when he left or when he got there.  He can't prove that either.  And, unfortunately....you can't prove that you yourself did not have it taken out and sold on the sly.  The chain of evidence is broken all the way through.  Not accusing you of anything...at all!  Just saying that it is a real hard deal to prove on anyone.  Does anyone have the serial # of the unit?  Good luck on this situation, this is a genuine tangle of who said they said....most unpleasant...

Did the dealer have the driver sign anything to pick up the trailer? A lot of times they will sign off a list of equipment.

Did the driver have you sign anything?

Is the driver an individual, or a driver that normally drives for a company and did this on the side?

You also said that you had the trailer insured already? Turn it into your insurance company with all of the info that you have and let them sort it all out. The only downside to that is your deductible and a claim on your insurance.

I hate that this happened to you! In this day and time the victims end up being the ones on trial (for lack of a better term). But I am afraid that you’re going to be fighting an up hill battle.

Here are a few questions that you’re going to need hard answers to: 1. Can you prove without a doubt that the hauler stole it? 2. Did you sign a delivery slip, most likely stating that it arrived safely, etc.? 3. Did you take it directly to the RV dealership as soon as it was delivered and not the next day? 4. Were you present when the RV dealer went over your trailer?

I had a car in storage, and something very similar happened in two days time. The garage with insured and my insurance company was paying the storage fee, but I was the one who took the loss.

Best of luck to you! And again, there is nothing worse than feeling victimized.

Try getting in touch with your state Public Service Commission and explaining your problem to them. You might be surprised at what your tax dollars can do for you.

if you have insurances then you will get the money for the stolen generator for them and the will look in to the theft of the generator ( like a radio in you car)

Big deal Paul. I still have to make the trip to Washington with a pick-up. Do you honestly think that I'd make the deal just for the trailer?I explained the reason why I'd have done it before. If that's lost on you.........
