I pull a custom Featherlite LQ 4-horse with a Dodge 3500 deisel 4x4,6-speed trans. I did chip my pickup for more hp. and also installed load levelers.

I have a black Ford auto. I know people who prefer Dodge with manual. Or Freightliner!

We've got two F350 crew cabs SRW's. 05 long box King Ranch 6.0, and 01 short box Lariat V10. Both have served us well with no problems.

I am currently seriously thinking about trading in my 3/4 ton 2000 Ford Super Duty Diesel for a gas Chevy 3/4 ton 8.1 with the M74 Allison Trany.I cant find any reliable info on gas mileage.  A couple of chat sites said the 8.1 can get 9 to 12 highway miles, one person said they got 13 mpg towing.   On my Ford I got 11 MPG towing 6,500 to 7,000 lbs.  and it didn't get much better than 11.7 -12mpg at the most on a long haul when not towing with the Diesel.  Diesel fuel went higher than gas $ the Month I got a deisel.   My diesel only has 125,000 miles on it the gas one I found I can trade even up with 61,000 miles with extended cab and long box that are very hard to find.

Just a friendly warning.   The 8100 GM gad engine will not come close to 1/2 the towing fuel economy of your PSD ford.  Those that are in our area with the 8.1 are lucky to get 5-6mpg towing any kind of load.

Well I used to haul our 3 horse 45 ft. long Sundowner (no slides) with a 2005 Chevy 3500 diesel dually 4x4 - but I always felt under-trucked - mostly stopping ability - so I sold that trailer went back to my favorite brand, 4 Star - 4 horse with slide-out - solid wood interior vs "photo-finish" and found that not only is the trailer quite a bit heavier - the pin weight is higher - after 1 blow-out on the trailer (lucky it was a 4Star - very minor damage) - and then blown main oil seal on truck - quickly sold it here on HTW and bought an International 4400 hauler!!!  You really can't go on what everyone else does - just because a truck will pull the weight - doesn't mean it is rated to do so under most conditions - although folks will do it anyway....I value my horses and my life more than that!  We did use the 1 ton dually trucks for years - but a REAL medium duty truck, with the RIGHT combination motor/transmission and rear axle ratings makes all the difference in the world!!!  With the prices of the new trucks skyrocketing we got in our opinion, more value with the International!  Also - it gets just as good mileage as our Duramax did!!!!! No Foolin!!!!

I'll pull 15000# to Jacksonville Fl. and back. My old 8.1/Allison with 4.10 gears will click off 8.7 mpg for the round trip running 70 mph. Drop back to 65 or below and that number will climb to 9.3 or better. Even across the mountains over into Tn. on I-40 it will get a steady 8+... Only gets aout 10-13 running around empty. It's a 2001 Chevrolet 3500 DRW, ext. cab 4x4 pulling a 4 Star, 6 horse head to head with a finished DR., 32' on the floor and this still my favorite..... I don't owe any $$$$ on it!!!

I did have a 1997 Dodge 2500 4 X 4 with a 360 before this truck and loved it other than the fuel economy- or lack thereof!

I have a 2008 Chevy 2500 HD with the deisel and Allison transmission.  I pull close to the max weight of 15,500 lbs when I have all three stalls filled in my LQ trailer.  I get around 12-13 mpg pulling and have no problems going or stopping.  Even though it is not a 1 ton dually I don't ever feel under trucked.  And I get 21 mpg on the highway when not under a load.

You should start a new thread.  I bet there's a lot of opinions flying around out there about your situation, but we shouldn't muddy the waters in this thread about our "Favorites."
