Yesterday I bought a new (to me) truck for pulling our trailer. Got an 05' F350 Crew Cab, long box, King Ranch Edition. 6.0 diesel. Best part is it has the integrated brake controller, a B& W Turnover hitch and the trailer plug already mounted in the box.

Figured out that the 01' CC, Short box just was not the best truck for our 8" wide trailer. Really liked an 05' Duramax we drove, but the dealer had it priced almost $2500 over book and wasn't going to give at all.

We drove the F350 over 300 miles before buying it, and had the trailer on for about 50 of those miles. Can't wait to get out and really do some pulling, which means we are gone with the horses.

I'm not a Ford fan but I love the King Ranch Edition. Congrats on the new truck.

Good luck with the 6.0 diesel.  Yours might be new enough, 03 and 04 had lots of problems

A friend of mine had an 06' that he traded in with 86,000 miles (Business truck). Got the 08' with the 6.4 and says he's ready to go back to the 6.0 any time. He usually trades every two years and started doing that in 1984. He's got three kids that go different directions for rodeo, barrel racing and shows all the time and he's got 6.0's for them. Two of them are away at different colleges with trucks and trailers. He says it was the 02 and 03's that really had the problems. Like he said, every time they come out with something new, it takes a little while to get the bugs worked out.

The resale on 6.0s is down the tubes. No body wants them. They had more then a few 'bugs'.Good luck with it.There is a reason they would not budge on the Duramax price.Friend of mine just ran into the same thing on a 05 Dodge dually with 25k on the speedo.Dealer told him if they had to keep it a year they weren't coming off one penny. They did drop it $500 and he bought it.

You bought the same truck as I have, except mine is the 06.

Mine pulls the trailers just fine.

The 6.0L came out in Dec 2002 as a Job 2 for the 2003 model year.  I bought one of the first 6.0 shipped to Utah. It was built 8 days into the new production run. I put 90,000 miles on it and sold it to a friend of mine who runs an excavation company. He still has it with 200,000 miles on it. (Almost every mile he has put on it has had a bumper pull trailer with a skid loader, mini excavator or load pipe on the trailer) It is still going strong for him

The 2005 and newer changed out the front springs for better turning radius, Larger wheels, 18" replaced the previous 16" wheels. mostly so they could upsize the disk brakes that were wearing out faster on the eariler models.

I usually buy a new one every three years, mainly because of how many miles I put on each year. But home building sucks this years, so I'm going to wait and see what the new 6.7 L looks like. Ford and Navstar have seperated ways and the 2010 trucks will have Fords new 6.7L Scorpian diesel engine. We will see if Ford can build their own diesel engine.

My 2005 F350 6.0 ran great every day that I had it.  The reason I traded it in was that it started losing about a gallon of antifreeze a week.  I had it to my dealer twice and they said there was nothing wrong with it and that losing some antifreeze was normal. BS.  I had the truck for nearly four years and it never lost any antifreeze until after I had for over three years.  So I knew it wasn't normal.  Given the lack of dealer support, all the negative experiences that I had read about and the fact that the Riccart folks seemed bored at the 2008 Congress, I took the opportunity to fix my antifreeze issue with a new truck.

The 6.0 has a history of issues, that's for sure.  But I think many of the issues became so awful for so many because the dealers really had no clue how to fix the engines....or they just didn't take the time to do the job right when they had the opportunity.

I have known techs and a service managers that left Ford stores over the 6.0. Got so burned out on the issues and owners that they went to other products.Spooler who posts on this forum from time to time got to watch a friend of his pulling a LQ in front of him have his 6.0 die.Said it started with little white puffs of smoke once in a while and then POW tons of white smoke(antifreeze) Head bolts stretched and head gaskets went.Spooler I think had to get his LQ home and went back for his friends.Eaither way they have gone down as one of Fords most costly mistakes.I was told at one time a millon bucks a day in warranty claims and buy backs.I just know the resale/trade in value is real poor on them. The TRUCKS themselves are nice and so are the Torqueshift transmissions.

I have a 03 6 leaker. My issues have mainly been fuel injectors. Truck won't hold a steady idle for long then it goes to skipping and surging when your stopped at a redlight. I would highly reccommend buying the 200K/3year warranty for about 1500 bucks. I have made my money back 3 times. If you ever see any white residue on the coolant bottle its either a bad egr cooler or blown head gaskets. Had both. Love the truck. Bought it because it had the biggest cab on the market and my kids were still in car seats and needed the room. Engine and tranny work together really well, but wished I didn't know my service adviser on a first name speed dial kind of way. Make sure you don't do anything to the truck that would give them any reason to deny your warranty claim. Chips/programmers etc.

The only thing I can find wrong with the truck is the exterior temperature readout is stuck at 50. Not a big deal, but drives me nuts looking at it. Since I didn't buy this truck at my local Ford dealership I am somewhat hesitant to go to them. Also they pretty much bad mouthed the dealer I bought it from (who I have bought from before), so I really don't feel like gracing them with any of my money. I was told that it is probably just the sensor and is an easy replacement. Just seems nobody I talked to seems to know where the darn thing is. Anybody got any ideas?

I have the '06 CCD 4x4 , B&W, and LOVE this truck. Only been to the dealer once and that was due to a Power steering leak (warranty). I do all my own maintenance (oil changes, etc). Good Luck. I think they worked out most of the '03-'04 bugs.

Don't let some of the post get you down.  Yes, the 6.0L STROKERS had a few problems, but most are driver related. (hard driving or highly modified)  The main problem they have is the egr cooler starts leaking and causing the truck to blow out white smoke and smell like coolant and will also idle rough when cold.  If you was to go to the dealer to fix it they will charge you around $3000!  If you go to http://www.powersrtoke.org/ and type in egr cooler in the search bar you will find that there is a by-pas kit that works great.  I buy a lot of 6.0's down here that people think is bad and I spend about $1000. on them and never have any more problems.  I try to tell people to fix it and keep the truck and all they say is "everybody said the 6.0's are trouble".  Find with me, I buy them even cheaper.

Just remember the key to these diesels is keep the air filter, oil, oil filter and fuel filters CHANGED often!

Good luck and enjoy your new truck, HTB

www.ford-truck.com or google search "Ford Truck Enthusiasts".  Someone there will know how to help you.

You can also try www.thedieselstop.com ; these folks are pretty good too. I think the FTE site is a little better these days, though.

PS: Hope I didn't break any forum rules by mentioning these sites.

Minnesota...HuH? Just remember to get your block heater ready for next winter and make sure you have a good cold weather shield...as for problems...YMMV...but I think the warranty is a good investment...

congrats and enjoy your new truck. Hopefully you have better luck with your truck than my husband has with his. He has a 6.0/04 and it has been nothing but a pain. It has 70,000 miles on it. It has gone through two turbos, a host of electrical problems, and now needs a new starter. He wishes he had his powerstroke back.

The 6.0L is a POWERSTROKE also!

FYI, on the aftermarket warranty, check the FINE print, most will NOT cover the egr crap and this is the main problems with these trucks!

barrelhorse- Thanks for steering me to the "Ford truck enthusiasts" website. Those guys have been very helpful. I've gotten multiple responses that have helped me diagnose my minor problems.

Paul, I didn't buy one truck that I looked at simply because it came from Arizona and didn't have a block heater in it. I've been working with diesel engines for twenty years as Transportation Director for our local school where all of our buses are diesels, and as a farmer with diesel tractors for longer than that. It may seem amazing but we can operate our diesel engines in -35F and a 40 mph winds for a wind chill of close to -100F.

Hey...you or your dealer can add a block heater to any diesel engine...

Windchill don't matter to a diesel engine, just our poor old SKIN...now ambient temperature is another matter...

One reson I like VT over ND...it's slightly warmer...

I think/thought the big three diesels all come with block heaters its the electric plug in CORD that's a option.
