I have a 3/4 ton 05' chevy duramax diesel w/ the allison tranny.  I'm looking to get a gooseneck trailer, but am worried about my truck because I have a short box.  A new truck is out of the question, and I really need a gooseneck trailer (big enough to sleep in, extra space).  I go camping a lot, and then there are the horse shows you go to and every hotel is booked solid.

Has anyone had big problems with having a gooseneck trailer w/ a short bed truck?

I am looking at getting an 04' Classic Monarch all aluminum goosneck w/ extended front dress room.  I really like the trailer, but want the safest darn trailer for the horses.  Is the extra space in the dress room going to throw off the weight distribution over the axles? I'm not too familiar with the Classic brand.  Anyone have any thoughts on this stuff?

There is another thred on here and you can do a search on this subject also.

However if all you have is a short bed...that's ok.Don't feel bad or be embarrased.Itjust happens sometimes.

Even with your SHORT commings, welcome and read away.

Most of the time a long bed is prefered however a short bed properly equiped will serve the purpose.

With a short bed, watch your turns,Sharp turns will let you hit the back or the cab if you jacknife.

I pulled a 4 horse Trailswest with dressing room with My F250 4X4 short bed crewcab for several years with no problems.

For most of your regular driving you will be fine, there is only a problem when you jacknife and there is not enough clearance for your back window of the truck.

I am not familar with that brand of trailer, but goosenecks are better than the bumper pulls as far as toung weight goes and towing.

good luck.

I'm not familiar with that brand of trailer, but if it has a tapered nose you shouldn't have any problem pulling it, I have been pulling a Titan gooseneck with a Ford short box since 2000,  I would have to jack knife clear around to hit the cab. If the trailer has the wide flat nose you would have to be very carefull when you turn. Their are extenders made for some hitches that set the trailer back farther, but you lose capacity when you use them. I think the B&W extender sets back 4" and drops the capacity from 30,000# to 20,000#

I have a Dodge short bed and pull a gooseneck with no 'extender' or modification to ball placement.

I saw a lady that had a classic with a short bed. She had ran into her cab. She was getting an extender put on.

I pull a V-nose gooseneck with a short box F350 no problem.  I believe the Classics have a rounded nose and you might not have the cab to nose clearance you would get with a V nose or a tapered nose trailer.  That will be your biggest concern.

There are lots of brands that make V nose and tapered nose trailers.  You might put that at the top of your requirement list in a trailer.

Well thank you for the complement!

I'm really excited.  My reining horse just recovered from hoof injuries, havent been able to ride her for 10 months, so I am really excited to get back on her, do some good schooling to get back where we were last year.  Then hopfully get out to some shows.
If anyone knows of any shows happening in the NW, let me know!

nabsolute,

Nice trailer...I'm in Albany and don't do the show thing so I'm not much help there. I believe you will have no problem with that setup. You might back it around and see how close it gets at certain angles. Then remember your limit! Eventually they will all hit if you keep going!

I drive a shortbed ext cab '06 2500 pulling a square nose goose (3 horse w/ 5 ft short wall).  I have to watch my cab in tight turns, but have had no problems.  I can get in & out of just about anything I could've with my much shorter bumper pull (16ft).

I have a short bed dually pickup (6 1/2 foot box) and pull a Featherlite 7' wide trailer.  The nose is tapered to 5', but is square and not v-nosed.  We haven't had any problems.  The only time we have to be careful is when we are backing up, going forward we don't turn short enough for it to be a problem.

A long box is better, but most of us use our trucks quite a bit for running around, and for ease of parking and manueverability, the short box is a nice compromise.  Long beds can be jack-knifed and hit the corner of a cab also, it's just not as likely to happen.  Besides, you bust out two or three rear windows, and you learn to be careful fairly quickly!

from the picture posted earlier, what would any of you estimate would be a good price for this trailer?

Its ALL aluminum (except for the steel hitch), insulated and fully carpeted dress room, rear tack, drop down's with bar guards, insulated horse area + triple wall construction and 'rumber' floor.  Only has 200 miles on it.   Its also got those 'tie rights', the things you tie your horse to that keeps them away from the trailer.

THANKS GUYS!!!

I bought an 06 just like yours, except that mine is a 2H with the shorter 4' hay-rack. I had a boot-box installed and the key lock option on the rear-doors. I also had a step installed at the tack-room door, one hay-rack water tank and one stand-up water tank in the GN. Also has the solid divider instead of the jail-bar looking divider. one spare tire with the jiffy-jack. I paid $18,999 brand new. Like you I am now broke! But it's worth it- I don't spend money on other things that most women do and don't have kids!

Enjoy your new toy!

I pulled a 3 horse Classic Monarch for 5 years with my Ford F350 CrewCab short bed.  Never had a problem.

I sold that trailer and bought a 2005 Classic Bunkhouse. In 5 years my trailer only depreciated $3500 It was great trailer and I'd strongly reccomend them.

I pulled a 4Star square nose trailer with a short bed truck AND a B&W Gooseneck extender.  Without the extender I would not have made it out of the sellers driveway with my rear windows intact.  I met several people who had smashed their rear windows by turning too sharply.  I use my trailer frequently at dog shows which are not always "trailer friendly".  People park cars everywhere in a big field and you are not always able to maneuver with the turning room you'd like.  Guess it may depend on where you will drive the trailer.  If you want to not worry about your turns, get the gooseneck extender.  It also gives you more room in the back of your truck.  I bought a new Ford long bed but kept the extender on the trailer.   Anyhow, I love the extender and surely would have had broken windows without it!

Well I bought the trailer. Picked it up on Saturday. Put more miles on it towing it home than it had before I bought it. It is absolutly a beautiful trailer. Couldn't be happier.

I stopped at a rest stop on the way home to check out my manuverability. People must have been looking at me like I was crazy... But I can safely do a 70 degree turn... There was still room for more, but I didn't have the space/time. I think I should be able to do a 90 degree turn, but havent tried it yet. Tonight the horses will go for their first ride, and before I leave I'm gonna see exactly how far I can take it.
Thanks for all of your comments and help. COuldn't be happier with the trailer. Now I don't think I would be happy with a different trailer : )
Almost a good thing that I missed out on an '05 3 horse Trails west for the rediculously low price of 12,000

Congratulations!  Sounds like you got a good deal.

I've yet to be in a situation where I couldn't maneuver enough with my short box and taper nose trailer...
