Suffering from cabin fever here in Wisconsin...so my thoughts have turned to my annual Easter trail riding vacation.  Usually go to LBL....but the aftermath of the ice storm may mean trails that look more like a war zone.  If given a choice....would you prefer  Double M in the Shawnee, Midwest Trail Ride campground near Norman, IN or d bar K campground at Mammoth Cave, KY.

This would be a 10 day trip ..... and we have gaited horses..so I usually go where they have 100 miles of trail available.  I have a living quarters trailer so don't need cabins.  Appreciate any input.

Thanks.

Hi Dee,

While I love D Bar K and Mammoth Cave, there won't be enough riding there for you on gaited horses for 10 days.  Have you ever been to East Fork Stables in Jamestown, TN?  There are miles and miles of trails with unbeatable scenery.

Where is Palmyra?  I grew up in Northern WI.

Happy Trails!

JacciB

Thanks JacciB for the reply and information.  Palmyra is near Whitewater & Janesville in Southeastern Wisconsin.    Going to Big South Fork is my dream.....but even for us in Southern Wisconsin it is a minimum of a 12 or 13 hour drive with a big trailer...and that's eating in the truck and only stopping for fuel.  I try to stay in the 10 hr. range for a day's drive. A two day road trip eats up too much vacation and trail riding time.  Retirement is only two years away and would love to visit Big South Fork without time constraints....

Shawnee would be your best bet to stay in the 10 trip time. There is alot of campgrounds to consider. Little Lusk, Hayes Canyon, 34 Ranch, Double M?, Look on Horsetraildirectory.com that should be helpful. Have a grand trip.

I'm planning my Spring Trail Riding trips too, but for a different reason. Probably going to get laid off soon. So, too make the best of it, I'll look for a job 4 days a week and ride for 3! Gotta ride to de-stress. Let us know where you go in Shawnee. We were there several years ago and stayed at Circle B. Heard that a lot of the trails have been closed, so let us know how the riding is and if there was ice damage there too.

I am wondering if Big Creek Trail Rides near Hartshorn, MO had significant ice damage.

Pony Tammy.. sorry to hear about your job..   I hope you find something else suitable real soon...Things have changed alot here, too.. Whereas we haven't been laid off (reg. nurse), almost everybody at my hosp is dissatisfied..  Those that are quitting are not being replaced due to the budget..Neither are supplies (like they should be).. Our hospital has closed two floors and combined the closed units with two other units, pooling their staff.  We are all working short-staffed, short-supplied, and short-changed.     I'm definitely having to remind myself to count my blessings..

Hey Pony Tammy we're planning a trip to Shawnee in May for 10 days. Our group is going to camp at Hayes Canyon. This will be our first time there so we are really excited about going.

I talked to Carolyn at CCTR in Eminence last week and they only got 3-4 inches of snow and no ice there. I know Hartshorn is not that far from there so maybe they missed the ice also.

Good luck on the job search.
Come on spring.

We love to try new places and have been itchen to go into the TN area.  You sparked my interest with East Fork Stables in Jamestown, TN.  I found their website and will be getting more info.  Very nice so far.

We could do this with a stop over between Mass and TN.  Any thoughts on a stop over?

Hayes Canyon Campground in Shawnee will give you all the riding you could possible want. With a great diversity of trail types, all the way from super highway trails to rugged, rocky, steep hill trails and everything in between.
Their web site is: http://www.hayescanyon.com/index.html

I do believe there are more trails there now than before they closed some. The Forest Service is not only building new ones continuously, they are also marking them with signs, and even have a good map. In addition to the marked trails shown on the maps, there are literally 1000s of miles of trails that are not on the maps.

Hey Bob, thanks for the additional info.  We had Patti send us a map, it's alot larger than the one on the website.  So do you think one should have a GPS unit with them, or are the trails marked well enough that an avid trailrider can figure it out by just using the map?

Thanks

Sue

If your going to ride the unmarked trails at Shawnee a GPS is a good idea.

Don't forget, Shawnee is huge, 1000s and 1000s of miles of trails. LBL is a toy trail ride. The majority of the trails at LBL are super highway trails. The miles of trails at LBL are very limited.

If you get a Garmin GPS, you can downloaded national/state park maps. This download becomes very useful for locating points of interest, forest service roads, and streams. And it is nice to have to track how many miles you have ridden.

LBL is currently closed to the public for all recreation.  The Trace (main North/South Rd.) reopened yesturday.  Everything else (all other roads and trails) remain closed due to storm damage.  Check their website before heading that way.

Well BBS i dont consider it a "toy ride" i have ridden for many years in the United States and in Canada on many kinds of trails and LBL is as beautiful, and can be as difficult as you want to make it, there are many back trails that can keep you out all day long and that is on a gaited horse and they don't poke along! And i don't get off and fool around when i ride i ride hard at a steady conditioning pace. We have ridden the Shawnee twice once at Bay Creek and once at Bear Branch i didn't enjoy either you can't move out on the trails you have to pick your way around the rocks ,at that time and i dont know if it has changed but you had to have a guide because the trails weren't marked! There were very few areas to enjoy the gait of my horse. That said if i wasn't heading to Wranglers i would go to East Fork or South Fork before i would pick the Shawnee!Mira

DeeI forgot to mention that the CampGrounds at Wranglers are very spacious and 99 percent of them are on flat ground you can reserve a site and the facility's are very clean. They have a restaurant on site also ,we have a 3 horse with a 12 foot living quarters trailer.Mira

East gang think East!  Your all going the wrong way again..

If we were to plan a trip to either of those spots we would need a stop over maybe in Pennsylvania.  Any suggestions?

Your all doing great, I have book marked all the web site you have been talking about.

Dee, have you ever been to Big Creek Trail Rides in Hartshorn, MO. There are hundreds of miles of trails. The campground land joins the Current River too. You can gait on the many miles of logging roads, or do some extreme hills and forest trails. There are also interesting points of interest around the Current River too. Although there are no "official maps", I just download the Current River map on my Garmin GPS and use it as a topo map. I believe they have an organized ride the week of Easter too - great food and nice folks. You can go out on your own or ride with a group of folks.

We started going there on QHs and met so many nice folks with gaited horses, that we sold the QHs and bought 2 out of our 3 MFTs from the camp hosts. Now we can easily ride longer distances in a shorter amount of time.

Shawnee National Forest is alot better marked than it used to be -  I believe you could get around just fine without a guide now

All of western KY was damaged by the ice storm.  Some areas are still without power.

We are less than an hour from Mammoth Cave and ride there a lot.  We haven't been since the storm but have heard that many trails are currently impassable.   I would wait until fall to ride MC or LBL.  Give folks some time to get things cleared up.

Not sure if the Shawnee was affected by the ice, but if you decide to go,  check out the One Horse Gap campground.  We have been there twice and just loved it both times.

If you head to Shawnee, perhaps you could do a stopover in Ohio....several places we are currently considering for long weekend trips for this year.....
